Rifle Scopes leupold (football) milling reticle

I have an older mk4 leupold and the mill marks on the reticle are shaped like footballs, what is the reasoning for this??? also what are the specs on the reticle, is it in moa or mils, anyone that has any knowledge about this please feel free to chime in, cause I don't know jack shit about football reticles

That is the USMC mildot pattern.
The ovals are .25 mil long and there is a .75 mil gap between them.
Of course, center of dot to center of dot is 1 mil.
