So I just purchased a .308 suppressor and I've come to the realization that I only have one .308 rifle(I plan to use the can on other rifles too). That being said I've been impressed with .308 ARs. I used to have a stock DPMS that would shoot sub-moa constantly but was very heavy(24in bull).

I want another .308 rifle but don't want a gun that is gonna be a bitch to shot from position/offhand. Below is a list of the items I'm thinking about using. I know a lot of you guy may have already been down this path and I wanted to get your opinion/advice.

18" med contour bbl
VTAC handguard
Magpul UBR

I'm thinking the 18" bbl would be a nice balance of velocity and maneuverability. The VTAC handguards seem to be the lightest on the market and they seem very sturdy. Also I hear there rails are solid. I have a UBR on one of my other rifles and love it, I think it would balance the larger .308 good.

The rifle will serve as a SPR type of platform and will be used to 1000yds max but realistically 0-600. Are there any stock rifles that fit this bill? Am I giving up too much with the 18" bbl? Any recommendations on building a .308 AR in general?

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

The problem to me is there still seems to be a limited amount of barrels available. The only one that comes to mind in that length is Noveske. But it will still be nose heavy with that barrel. The UBR seems to be mentioned by a lot, that will be the replacement on my own CAR-10 as it's a little muzzle heavy with a 16 and 6 pos.

That would definitely be accurate enough to go to 600. A friend has the DPMS carbine and I was surprised how accurate his was with some of my reloads, it was about MOA at 100 with him and irons. I can't comment on the VTAC, but from their site it looks to me like they're ar-15, not .308.

If I were you I'd try and handle a carbine length .308 and decide if that would work for you. If you have big bucks, you can get a Larue or LWRC with an 18" barrel.

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

there are places you can get any spec barrel you need made. plus kreiger criterion from fulton comes 16" and 18" and black hole will make anything you want

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

At 16" AR10 type rifle is all you need, at most 18"... but for light and handy a custom upper will get you anywhere you want to go.

POF uses Mike Rock - Rock Creek Barrels and are perfect for your application. Plus the piston helps it stay cleaner with the suppressor.

My 16" GAP 308 only need 39MOA to 1000 yards at sea level, and is an absolutely hammer at 800 yards. That has a tight bore Bartlien and AAC 7.62SD suppressor and works great.

Go to the Home Page and if you have an account you can see the video of my 16" GAP AR10 type rifle. (free account works) Or look for it on YouTube

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

Just off the range. AR-10 16" Carbine (standard barrel and factory 2-port brake); Larue 9.0 rail; Geissele SSA trigger; Leupold TS-30 A2 3-9X in Larue mount; Slash's heaviest AR-10 Carbine buffer plus heaviest Tubb Carrier Weight. "Dont forget nothin'" checklist checked, still forgot GI sling at the house (jackass) so simply shot off box and gun case.

155 Sierra Match Kings, 45 grains of Varget, Federal commercial and Lake City '96 M118 Match brass, around 2550 fps, ten rounds per mag.

Groups start opening up from 400 to 500 to 600. View from the 600 yard berm, 600 yard target on point 3 (another shooter breaking in a National Match Course rifle), four E-types at point 4. Winds switching from 3 minute full value to half value from the left.

600 yard target (at this range just a little wider than 3 MOA). Minute-and-a-half left on, lost a few to the right. Not so much a group as still hitting steel using left shades and favors. Target puller says rounds still smacking hard. Shoulda brought the sling. Not bad for a standard 16-inch barrel.

If you can shoot an M4 you can shoot a 7.62 carbine. Armalite is doing a run of 16-inch AR-10Ts in August.

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

Thank you very much for the info guys, I have a lot to consider now. This build will definitally be a thrifty build so i think POF will be out of the question. I'm thinking a 16" bbl might be my best bet.

Lowlight: I found your page but was only able to find the POF .308 video with techno music

Sinister: Have you done any grouping on paper?

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

You should really try or checkout D9 firearms they have a white oak barrel that's got a really nice contour and fluted to match. Its kinda pricey $690 but its going on mine when get all my parts and I'm ready for a barrel.

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

I've shot this on paper to zero but not for group size, per se.

It will shoot a 100-3X - 100-4X on an NRA Short Range 200-yard highpower bull target using coat, sling, glove, and mat. While I have bench rests I have more appropriate rifles for other disciplines.

This carbine is easy to carry and swing and fine for hostiles, pigs, coyotes, or deer at 300 yards without needing or feeling like a couple of hours on a Universal machine. You can shoot it off-hand. 500 yards is almost a can't-miss.

It is WAY handier than a 22-inch AR-10T, 700V, and M14. It's not so long and heavy you feel compelled to extend the bipod and shoot on your belly.

You have to be on with your winds at 600, more so with a shorter barrel. If you can dope it, shoot it, and call it it'll hit.

I want to eventually swap out the standard barrel with a stainless cut-rifled once I shoot this one out.

This was my build.

It uses a 18.5" med contour criterion barrel.
The yankee hill float tube is light, inexpensive, and you can add rails when, and where you want them.
The evolution gun works gas block is my favorite so far, and only $50.
If I could do it over, I'd have a Kreiger heavy fluted barrel chambered up somewhere around 16.5" - 18.5".
I like the full length gas system even though it really isn't that important.

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

For the sake of this discussion, what is the heaviest AR 308 that is still considered light? There has been much discussion on the Internet about the weight of the LMT MWS and the Larue OBR. At 12 to 13 pounds, an MWS with scope, buis, and loaded 20 round mag is not exacyly "light", but I'm wondering how much lighter you think an accurate AR for 0-800 yard in 308 can get.

Re: Lighter AR10/.308 AR

I'm thinking around 12lbs loaded is about the top end for me. I shoot my .338LM from position sometimes to prove to myself that I can do it. I want a 0-600 rifle that will rip shit up. I'm gonna put a can on it so I think I'm gonna get a 16" bbl. I'm trying to decide what contour would be best. And also what bbl manufacturer to go with. I can't spend over $400 for a barrel.
