I spotted a Ruger with a heavy Lilja drop in barrel a while back and scooped it up locally.
I haven't really shot it and recently had a relapse of new firearm fever.
A petite, efficient 22 wildcat that could easily replace the 17 was up for sale.
I decided before leveraging my new purchase with the 17 I should at least take it to the range.
It was partly sunny with variable winds up to 15mph.
The rifle is unbedded with a Weaver Grand Slam 6-20x40.
The previous owner said the Hornady loaded 17 grainers were the way to go and I followed his lead.
I used the range supplied sandbags and shot off the bench.
Most of my groups show a need of better wind reading.
The 100 yard groups were pretty good but not as nice as the 50 yard ones.
Picking off pieces of clay pigeons was easy and tagging clays turned on edge was cake.
My groups at 100:
My groups at 50:
The first shot of the first group is was fired, then the range officer called cease fire. After a walk downrange and wait I fired the next four. Aiming that the orange bulls wasn't at all precise, I found that my groups were tighter while aiming at the centers of the letters.
This is my first foray into the 17 and was pretty impressed.
I can't wait to shoot it on a warm still summer day.
Preferably at some groundhogs.
If you've been thinking about buying one of these, I wouldn't hesitate.
