LMT MWS or SCAR17S

Re: LMT MWS or SCAR17S

I go with the scar, but it's because I have one, and really like the stock, the charging handle/forward assist, and my gun has been 100%.

Re: LMT MWS or SCAR17S

MOD tested the SCAR-17 and selected the MWS. KAC did not submit for MOD trials.

In consideration that the MWS was the rifle that met all accuracy and reliability criteria of the MOD I would say get the MWS.

I have one so maybe a bit biased but I did my homework prior to purchase and it has not dissapointed.

Re: LMT MWS or SCAR17S

I am a little biased on this... And I have not fired either. But I have held and played with both. Fit and finish on the LMT is incredible, and I am a sucker for the AR platform. But the FN just feels so much lighter (more than the advertised 1.5lbs). Not particularly important for long-range precision work, but for general purpose hunting or shooting the SCAR is hard to beat.

I own a LMT MRP, not a SCAR 16. But would own a SCAR 17 (and even bought one) over LMT MWS.

Re: LMT MWS or SCAR17S

Yes the MWS is a heavy rifle. As a fighting carbine it would not be my first choice however I'm still about 2lbs less than I was with my AI/NF F-1 and 5 rounds than I am with my MWS with uso and 20 rounds.

If you are primarily interested in precision shooting again my nod is to the LMT. For use primarily as a run and gun or hunting platform where weight is a huge concern over accuracy I would put the MWS towards the bottom. No getting around it...they are heavy f#^kers.

Re: LMT MWS or SCAR17S

Splitting hairs but yes they sent a rifle and yes the one they sent didnt fit the requirement and was not evaluated.

Quote from Kevin Boland from M4CDN;

"We did not submit a gun.

There was a trial here of more importance, and we had no intention on letting the SR-25EMC out of the bag before it...

We are happy with our decision"

Later he says:

"Our then Rep submitted a 20" gun with bolt on shell deflector.
The shell deflector made it non compliant. As the optic could not mount with it attached.

Companies could submit barrels from 16" ->

However OAL was also a deciding factor, so if you could make the Accuracy requirement at 800m with the shorter gun it was a good thing."

Re: LMT MWS or SCAR17S

I know but Kevin also said the person responsible was fired or let go. So they didn't summit a gun but then they did, and because someone submitted the wrong one he was fired. Sounds rather odd to me.

Re: LMT MWS or SCAR17S

I have been debating over this same issue for a few months now. Found a nicely priced new mws on gun broker and bought it the other night. I chose the mws due to cheaper price at the moment, greater chance of replacement parts and barrels in the near future, and cheaper mags. I am planning to use this rifle as a general purpose rifle with a ta11 acog on top.

I like the scars a lot, and love my 16s, but the lack of support from fn is a drawback in my opinion.

If lack of support changes in the future and mags are overpriced, then I won't feel bad at all about selling the mws and getting a 17s.

Re: LMT MWS or SCAR17S

MWS
I do not have faith in FN's ability to bring affordable replacement parts to the market. As is stands now, the SCAR-H comes with 1 magazine and no word when more will come down the pipe. God help you if you want to take advantage of the quick change barrel feature with something as crazy as a new barrel. So, the great modularity that drives the SCAR platform is effectively neutralized by the manufacture's business practices. In addition, I'm not convinced that FN has the stock latch problem fixed. The latch on my SCAR-L broke and there are more reports of latch failures coming from the field in the heavy model. FWIW, Bob Ailes at FN did get my stock fixed in under a week, but this stock is not built for hard use.

On the other hand, LMT has a track record of bringing parts and accessories to the market in a timely manner. Also, there are tons of after market mags that are readily available.
