Range Report Long Distance 1k+ .308

I'm looking for a round that will push out past 1k. I was using 175s, but the drop is way too significant. I need something that flies flatter. It is a windy course. 10mph wind is average. I am thinking the 155 Scenars?

I don't need any takedown power as this round is solely for dinging steel.

I have Blackhills (Winchester) brass and will buy any recommendations as far as primers and powder.

I would say use the 155's and push them with H4895 close to 2,900 and you would have a winner.

I think you mean H4895.

46gr of Varget with a 155 scenar will get you there as well.

.260 Rem. All you need is a new barrel and your good for about 1550yds. You wont get as much mileage out of the .260 barrel as compared to a .308's barrel life but, it will last longer than a .243 or a 6.5

The 155 scenars will work better than the 175's as long as you push them around 2900 or over, or you wont match the 175's BC.

There is a reason why all the comp. shooters use the .260

Another vote for 208 AMAX with a touch of RL15. I can get it to go about 2650 fps. Should be good out to 1200+. You are going to need something with high BC and decent velocity. Short of going to the 300 WM, or 300 RUM, 308 may just be a bit too slow to push the heavier bullets.

Have a look at Hornady 178g SST Superformance. BC 0.53, Muzz velo 2775 c30 MOA drop out at 1,000 yrds i believe but you will have to check. Lapua Scenar 155g HPBT GB491 might be an alternative.

Work up slowly to 47.8 gr Varget watching pressure signs. You will get 2925-2950 fps out of 155 Scenars, 155.5 FullBore, and 155 SMK (2156). These will give you less than 31.0 MoA to 1000 at sea level 59dF, and are capable of hitting the target at 1300 yards. {175 SMKs at 2650 are 40 MoA at 1000 yards.}

What explanation do you need? You said <span style="font-weight: bold">ALL</span> the comp shooters us the .260. And we know that is not the case. Might want to look into the case for the 7WSM and the .243. Both of which will smoke a .260

With a 1:12" twist, the 208 might work. You would have to test it in your rifle to see. But the 190 SMK would be a good choice. Push it as fast as possible with R15 or R17, and try mag primers. I would neck size the cases to get a little extra case capacity and seat the bullet out as long as possible.

Better bang for buck, and easy to find.
If your range only has a 10 mph wind for a variable, you might have some of us come and shoot with you!

As far as powder.
What are you using now?
What are your reloading methods?
Primer is just the thing that makes it go bang.
I've used large br rifle in a pistol, and large pistol in a rifle.

Shooting more is better than reading and wondering.

Try JLK 175 or 180, or Berger 185 VLD's. Try them with Varget.

and to think those nutty Brits shoot 1200 yds at sea level with a 155 at Bisley... guess they didn't get the message that 155s would not work that far out of a 308.

Not sure the 168s will get you there consistently. You are right around the velocity where it starts to die at 1000 yds. I have trouble getting out past 700 with my .308 with 168s and 155s, but I think I need to step it up on the charge with the Palmas.

C. Ward has seen me hit a plate at 1350 with my 24" .308 shooting 155 Lapuas (at 4000' altitude). Hit ratio was much lower than using my .260 and I think some of them were just falling out of the sky. At that time the velocity was maybe 2850; now I shoot at 2930 fps using Varget.

A bud and I shot a 1 1/4 MOA plate at 1021 yards, side-side with 24" barreled 260 and 308. Him shooting the 139 Scenar, me the 155 Scenar at 2875 FPS. 7080' ASL.

The 260 produced a higher hit percentage in the tricky wind.

Both riflemen banged the crap out of the steel.

I have had good luck with rl-17 and 190gr. bergers in lapua brass with cci br4 primers. I was good up to 47.2 grains before I got pressure problems and had a velocity of 2700. At 1250yd I get more than half my shots on an 18" plate.

If you are taking the 308 past 1K, I'd suggest that you look more at supersonic range potential, and wind drift numbers. Drop is not as critical as that is predictable and can be adjusted for. If your scope is running out of erector travel, you may need a base with more slope, or possibly a reticle that is calibrated in mils or moa to give you some more holdoff.

Back to bullets, the 208 AMax over RL17 is going to be tough to beat regarding ss range and drift. The 210 JLK, 190 JLK, 210 SMK, 210 Berger, 190 Berger will alos be top contenders in my opinion.

Not sure of your local elevation, but for reference here at 4500' el, here's hoe the 155 Scenar and 208 AMax stack up against each other from my 20.5" 308

The 155 Scenar is down to 1200 fps at about 1250 yards. The 208 holds 1200 fps to 1500 yards. Diffference in trajectory past 1K, is not much.

At 1200 yards, the 208 saves 2+ moa of wind drift.

Also, I ran calcs with the 155 Scenar at a BC .475. Yes I shoot them too. The .508 BC advertised just doesn't seem to work out in any of my calcs. At .475, it's pretty darn close.
