Re: Long range hunting equipment list.

Try PodClaws for the Harris Bipod. They are a huge improvement in the field over the Harris rubber stopper feet - HUGE improvement.

Sling is another thing I take that is not on your list.

Also, a lightweight raincoat or pancho go in the pack almost all of the time. Like you in Oz, we in Texas have some hot days when it is not quite as necessary.

Re: Long range hunting equipment list.

First I like a little heavier gun than a mtn. gun type.
Here is a list of what I have used to mtn game hunting under 694 yrds. ( actual kill at that distance.)
My rifle was 300 WSM, 22" barrel. McMillan HTG Stock. ( I have since switched to their new A3 sporter.)Stiller action, badger bottom metal, jewell trigger. Hand loads with Barnes Triple shock 168GR.
Scope is Swar 5x25 Z6i or S&B 5x25 PMII
Harris Bi-pod. Standard sling but was mounted with flush cups on left side on rifle.
I used a Barney's Sport chalet Pack ( external frame pack ) Works best for hauling meat. Specially the animal I shot which had to be carried 2.9 miles to the river....5 trips each of us had to take.....
Hilldeberg tent.
Northface -40 bag, with liner and compression sack.
Wool sox 3 pr
long underwear 2 pr ( polertec )
Rei one pants 2 pr
Marmot Gortex wind shirt
Hard mountain Water proof jacket ( Did I say light weight water proof shell )
brooks range jacket ( probably one of the most important item )
Gortex hat. and gloves
head lamp
Gators.
Mendal boots
Jet boil w/ 2 canisters
mountain houses ( quantity varies with day in field )
Spoon 2 ( I have been known to loose one )
Scalpal w/ plenty of blades ( a must because I can not sharpen a knife if my life depended on it )
2mm cord 100 foot
small first aid kit
Nomad ballistic computer W GPS
extra batteries
kestral 4500nv
Bruton Solar pad recharger
SAT Phone to call family....
Camera G12 Canon
carbon fiber tripod with grip lock
Ziess range finder binocs
Hendshedt ( sp ) Spotting scope
log book ( which should be the rain proof paper )

Now the only change is in The rifle because I want to shoot farther then 700 yards, So I am stepping up to the 338 Lapua...
here are some animals for your enjoyment

That a ton of stuff to carry,

Harris 6-9 fixed BiPod plus 13-25"- ( shooting sticks and shoot off pack )
Red-Tac rear beanie bag. ( have one - have never taken it hunting - never needed it )
HP PDA back up with Exbal program. ( printed drop chart and phone program is enough )
Canon digital Video camera and tripod. (too much weight and bulk )
Canon still camera. (see phone camera )
Kestral 3500 weather station. ( small - may be useful? )
Scalple ( ? scaple as in a knife )

+1, great pictures!!!

Re: Long range hunting equipment list.

Thanks,

Yes the scaple is a great kept secret....

My list is for being out one to two weeks....It works better if you have a buddy hunting with you. B/c you guys can divide up some stuff. ( like you really only need one spotting scope with tri pod, 1 tent, one nomad, one kestral, etc.....

But if you are going to shoot moose. I STRONGLY SUGGEST A FULLY GUIDED HUNT...... After you shoot it and take pictures, you can tell the guide you will see him back at camp. LOL....LOL....

Re: Long range hunting equipment list.

wow, those are truly some great trophies! some things i put into my daytrip backpack. i take a burlap camo netting that i keep in my backpack. you can use it as a blanket, it works great as a sunshade, a wind block or a shooting mat. i also throw the fanny pack into my backpack in case i need to lighten my load. i put some toilet paper as it has more than one use. you can use it to track an animal by tying it to brush anytime you see blood. after a while you can look back and see the general direction the animal ran, plus it biodegrades easily. the kestrel will go, as well as my knife and an ink pen. dont forget the flashlight! it works great but i have never hunted far enough away from camp as i would have to make camp on a mountain. i have a big heavy set of nikon binocs that i plan on replacing for a lightweight, semi compact pair.
