Good chance that i will be in mesa for several weeks this year. Travelling from kansas.
two main question are
1 what is the process for flying with a rifle. I have never done it before just looking for informatiom
2. What are some good places to shoot long range. Established ranges ad well as blm land typ e locations.
any help is greatly appreciated.
if this is the wrong forum, apolo gies. Mods..let me know and i will delete or move the post.

Im not sure if this post is in the right place either but I'm curious about your question because im also going to be in Mesa for a while lol. Movong out there pretty soon. Itd be nice to see whats availablee for shooting premises.

There are two big public ranges, Ben Avery and Rio Salado. Ben Avery has a 1000 yard range and Rio has a 500 I believe. But being able to shoot on those if you are visiting could be a challenge. Phoenix Rod and gun has a 500 yard range (very basic), but is a private range. I’m in Mesa and would be happy to take you there when you are here. Cowtown has a PRS match once a month (dates change) that goes to 1200 yards. Rio has one on the 2nd Sunday of the month (3gun match the Saturday before) that goes to 500. There are a bunch of desert spots about 45 mins from Mesa. In an area called 4 peaks there are a few spots to get some distance. BUT putting out targets out past 200-300 yards through the desert is tough. Hope this helps!

Shooting ot in the desert can be tricky if you don't know where you're going. Lots of 4x4 and dirt bike traffic in some areas.

Im a member at Cowtown and could possibly bring you as a guest depending on dates and times. I work weekends sho it would have to be during the week. Cowtown had steel from 100 yards to 1380.

Which platform are you getting 1380 off of? Dirt bike and 4x4 traffic is why I joined Cowtown?

I've flown with rifles on Southwest several times, you have a locked box and check it like any other luggage. Usually the baggage check is outside and you'll get a tag for it. Pretty sure that ammunition can be in the same case but obviously the weapon cannot be loaded. Magazines can be loaded though.

Is there anywhere in the Mesa/Phoenix/Scottsdale area where I can check out an AI? Does Scottsdale gun club carry them?

Where are you at? I have an AT that I’d be happy to let you check out. My schedule’s crazy, but if you want to meet at Rio Salado or something, I’d be happy to provide the rifle for a “test drive” if you bring ammo... :)

I know nothing about flying with firearms it sounds like it should be simple enough , and lots of things sound simple and turn up messed up , I hope you and your guns have a safe and hassle free trip as for me I am driving with my gun , that is just me . Even if i have to rent a rv room to stretch out no crying children or adults that cry like children . or a rental car .

Just saw this. If you want to take a look at it, let me know and we'll find a way to meet up. I'm afraid I only have the one, and can't quite offer a MileHigh quality experience... :ROFLMAO:
