Suppressors Looking at getting first CAN. Need direction

Nearly all the componets are at the 'smith's. Surgeon 591 SA, Kreiger 26" MTU contour in 6.5x47 Laupa, 1.5 AICS, Shilen trigger and NXS 5.5-22x50. While at the 'smith's was wondering if that would be the best time to get it threaded for a CAN. Have never owned one and I'm not worried about the legalities of owning one. First off I live in Utah; very open state concerning guns. I carry open for crying out loud. Second off I have an FFL. So, what would be a good solid CAN that's not going to take me months and months of eating Top Raman to save up for it. It should be detachable. It should be of sufficient quality that I can resell if the need arises. Would not prefer to add tons of weight on the end of the barrel. Something that won't change POI; if that's possible.

I'm in the same boat myself. After some research, I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the big names like Gemtech, AAC, AWC. However, for myself, I am going with the Shark supressors. Expensive, but everyone reports good things about them.

Prioritize the following:

Length
Weight
Suppression
Cost
Mounting style
Material type
First Round Pop
Warranty / Manufacturer reputation


POI shift is more a function of weight and mount. All you care about is that it is repeatable. Record both and move along.

A thought - if you ever see yourself shooting something bigger than what you have now - scale up. ie if .30 cal - get something magnum rated, or get a .338 can and get the best you can.

Thought #2 - once you buy it - you're married to it. Used cans transferred intra state will take a pretty big hit on value. Inter state - requiring a 2 stamp transfer - unless you just want to give it away you will end up keeping it. Did I say buy the best you can and scale up?

If you want a can that has little shift and is repeatable honestly I would get a SureFire. Most of the SureFire suppressors have less than 1 MOA shift and it is repeatable everytime. They are expensive but they are worth it in my opinion.

They are also very lightweight and it takes seconds to put them on and off.

This is a huge one and as he said, resale sucks!!! Don't use that as a factor as it's not. You'll lose your a$$ if you must resale.

I have an ED brown .308/ 24" barrel in McMillan stock & had it threaded 5/8 X24. I then bought a SAS 7.62 can from a hide member. While I do not have any experience with other cans, I think this one is great. The rifle grouped about 3/8" @ 100 yds w SMK 168's w/o can and does exactly the same w/ the can installed. POI shift is about 1/2 MOA and consistent. Will admit this can is heavy & hurts the balance-almost a 2 lb piece of steel hanging off the front. You'll (if like me) be surprised to hear the bullet hit the berm, for the first time... Price is very reasonable, I think. Good luck w/ your build.

I'm really happy with my AAC 7.62SD. You can run a QD muzzle break for it. My POI change is 1" lower at 100yds w/ can on. Windage is perfect and POI change is repeatable with the QD attachment.

If you just wanted to have a thread on can, check out the AAC Cyclone. Either one would do you proud. I agree about the lack of resale. Figure that you'll own it for life.

FFL has nothing to do with it. Not a fan of quick detach either. Need it light? Well aluminum is off the list and that means titanium and a well made, well designed titanium can that doesn't ring costs bigger bucks than the cheaper stuff. If your smith had to tell you to consider a can, your not exactly pressed for time. Start doing the work and hear as many cans as you can. Until then, tell him 5/8 X 24 and your done....
