Looking at next precision rifle 260 vs. 7mm-08????

It seems like alot of guys like/build the 260. Why the 260 over the 7mm-08???

I like it due to bullet choice.

but both against eachother and the 260 will run the same BC bullet a bit faster.
Alos i like to use 308 Lapua brass and neck it down , it makes the necks a little thicker making for a slightly toghter neck than factory without having to have a tight neck chamber cut and turning all your brass

I prefer the .260 over the 7mm-08 because the different weight/BC ratio in a sense. The high BC bullets in the 6.5 are around the 120-140gr range allowing fairly high speeds paired with those. The 7mm-08 seems to hit it's stride around the 168-180gr range, with ok speeds from the load data i've seen for 168 and 180gr bullets.

Good question, after doing alot of research I chose a 7mm08, because it has more down range energy and it will give me more barrel life.
Here is the information that I posted a few weeks ago.


I ran these numbers using Sierra Infinity V6 program and average Velocities from the reloading section. I am getting my rifle rebareled, so at this point it is speculation until I can get it to the range. Here is the data, if you see it another way, run the numbers.

One thing to keep in mind, regardless of which caliber you choose is getting these long bullets to fit in your mags.
I am using a Sako TRG platform so it will allow bullets to be a COAL of 2.945 and fit in the mags.

Already been answered but I'll repeat the answer, bullets. My next rig will most likely be 6.5x55 for this reason.

I bet the .260 has a little less recoil too. I burn 42grns in my 6.5 creed with a 130grn Berger (.552 B.C) to go over 2800fps not pushing anything at all. How many grns do you shoot in the 7-08 with a 162 to reach 2726fps? For me energy doesnt matter much because my 6.5 is a comp gun so im not shooting any game with it. How much more barrel life do you expect to get from the 7-08 compaired to the .260?

I shoot a 7-08AI out to 1000 yards. The best bullet I have found for that distance is the 168gr Berger. Better BC

I couldn't find any load data on the 7-08AI how are your results? The 168gr Berger VLD has a damn good BC. I was contemplating about a 7-08 build but saw alot of load data that was only getting the 168gr bullets around 2500-2600fps, which will get the job done but i would want more.

I run the 162 amax at 2700 and the 162bthp is at 2775 out of my rig. The 260 are always right with me at any condition except for ranges over 1000yards in heavy wind. Once we get out past 850 the added weight and BC seam to give me an edge. Also I don't have to spend 44.00 a box for the good bullets. Mine are only 30.00 for 100.

PM me any questions you have on the 7mm-08. Also if you hunt at all the 7mm is capable of dropping an elk at 700, so there isn't much it can't handle.

I'm running 7-08 win brass and have run 308 win brass necked down. When necking down 308 brass it leaves your neck a bit short.

As far as recoil goes, I am going to run the same brake that I used for shooting .308 175grn SMK's, so I don't expect recoil to be an issue.
I am being told that I can expect over 1,000 shots as compared to the 260.

Thanks for the replies so far gentlemen. Both are fine rounds that really dont leave a shooter wanting for much. The only reason I may just go with the 7mm-08 is because I might use the rifle for some black bear hunting. If it wasn't for that possibility I would probably build a 260 and I am not real sure yet that I still wont. Maybe just build them both, get it over with and have the best of both worlds.

Unless you want a short action, 6.5x55 will do everything you're planning to do. Lapua Scenar 139gr loaded to 3000-3100 fps will do wonders.

I built the 260. Why?? Because the 140 AMAX. I love it. My dope at 1000y is 8.4mils up and at 1 mile is 26mils up. I really cant comment on the 7-08, it appears to look very promising.

By running the numbers across a couple calculators at my density altitude I maintain around 750ftlbs of kinetic energy at 1000y. Would I shoot game at that distance....only if it was a hell of a wall hanger!! I do know that bullets still splash with authority and steel swings at 1000y!

Regardless to what any calculators say....shoot the damn thing, hell if all I had was a 223 or a 308, I would still be happy pulling the trigger. There is no replacement for knowing how your platform is going to behave at any given condition. As far as barrel life is concerned....I really dont care. It doesn't stop me from shooting. Do we build these things to shoot them or to put them in the safe and talk about them? I know that I will have over 700 rounds down my barrel after this weekend, and I got it back the first week in March. Boots Obermeyer, one of the god fathers of 6.5mm, has a 260 barrel with over 6000 rounds through it, and it still maintains way under MOA accuracy (I am not going to quote anything smaller than MOA because I cant rightfully recall, but I think it was more like 1/2moa).

I do run my loads hot, but that got me the performance I was looking for. I dont have any pressure signs, if you toss out the remington brass that I blew primer pockets out in 2 reloads. With necked down 7-08 Win brass I have reloaded them 5 times with zero out of tolerance anything.

All my opinion. You will be happy with what ever you build. My only recommendation is to go with the radiused rifling i.e 5r, 5c or any of those. Call Tom at Broughton and see what he says about it or Boots Obermeyer himself and see what he says about it or John Krieger and see what they say about it. Radiused rifling is the cats ass, in my opinion.

Of the two my vote is for the 260. The 139/140/142gr bullets are more than enough to take game. All about shot placement. And the 260 has enough ass to throw those rounds at ~2900ish FPS (especially if you mod your mag/feed ramp to give the 260 some breathing room for some extra OAL). In my opinion if you are looking into the 7mm family I would lean toward one of the mags -- SAUM. Going with the 7mm-08 you don't have the ability to take advantage of the 180gr VLD with it's .659 BC and throw it with enough velocity. Just my .02 cents.

162 amax's at 2800 fps (my rifle). Its a dead heat with the 260 as far a wind and drop to 1000 but the 260 give up some down range energy (if that matters to you) over all they are both great options and I do feel that the vote should got to the 260 for bullet availability but the brass is more spendy and not as forgiving in my experience.

I have seen a few people say this. How does the 6.5mm have better bullet options than the 7mm. When the 7mm has the 168gr(.617BC) and 180gr(.657BC) Berger bullets and Hornady has several weight options 139gr/154gr/ 162gr AMAX (.625BC). I know most only use the 162/168/180gr bullets but even then they are the highest BC bullets short of throwing .338 Lapua Mag bullets. Maybe I am reading into this the wrong way.

And being able to sling a 180gr VLD at 3050fps is 22.75 MOA/6.6 MIL of drop at 1k, granted the 7mm-08 can't do this but the other 7mm rifles can.
