Alright, I am looking for a .308 and I need some advice on the subject. Iam looking at 3 different rifles. One being the FN SPRA1, Savage10 FCP McMillan, or the Remington 700 Tactical(26"BBL). I dont care about push feed or controlled feed because iam not going to shoot the gun upside down. Iam looking for a good rig that i can build on. All being great rifles, I need some good facts that may help in my indecisiveness.

I like the Savage simply because it comes with a Mcmillan stock and you can never go wrong with a Savage for accuracy. If you plan on building the gun up, you at least have a very expensive piece (stock) out of the way. My Savage is a shooter, as well as my 700, but if I had to bet my own money on what would shoot best out of the box, I would go with Savage because I see more guys on a regular basis shooting factory Savages better than factory Remingtons. Not sure on that particular model of the FN. Just my .02

how much do you want to spend on upgrades? and when do you want to upgrade it?

all are great rifles, but the savage is probably the most accurate out of the box without upgrades. And as snipedog said, you already have the mcmillan stock.
On the other hand, there are plenty of used parts out there for the remmy.

What price range are you going for?

Re: Looking for a .308 rig. Need some opinions..

I'm relatively new to bolt guns. I recently bought an SPS Tactical. It shoots very well, but the problems that I've had with it have me wondering if I should have gone with a Savage.

Right out of the box, I had to get a new extractor. My scope mount holes are drilled off center and am now finding out that this is not uncommon for Remingtons. I went with Burris Signature Zee rings to correct this for the time being. My biggest problem is with the rust. No matter what I do or how much I try to protect it, it gets surface rust on it. Although it may be possible that the upper lines of Remingtons get more attention to detail in assembly and a better finish, I don't think I'll be buying anymore bottom of the line rifles from Remington.

Considering that getting a new stock was a must (for me) and I didn't like the X-Mark trigger much at all, I would have been better off just getting an action from either Brownell's or Iron Brigade and building a rifle from that.

Of course, my SPS purchase was an impulse buy, but if I had it to do again, I may very well go for the Savage equivalent.

On the plus side, I can hit paintballs at 100 yards with boring regularity.

Re: Looking for a .308 rig. Need some opinions..

How much do you have to spend? What is the end use of the rifle? Do you plan on working on it yourself or have a smith/custom builder work it? Why .308? Do you plan on ever changing caliber?

There are a lot more questions that need to be answered before truly well informed advice can be given.

For a precision tactical rifle, either the M700 or FN-SPR. Either will serve well and then be rebuilt. The M700 has the upper hand in aftermarket support but everything necessary if also available for the FN, just not the depth of selection.

Re: Looking for a .308 rig. Need some opinions..

I just purchased a Remington 700 SS 5R MilSpec .308. I had
a Harris Bi-Pod installed, swapped out the trigger with a Jewel
custom trigger and added a Karsten cheek piece. I went with a
NightForce NXS 5.5-22x50mm Zero/Speed Turret for the optics.

I'm very happy with this rifle. I shoot steel out to 1000 meters
with this rifle using factory ammo (Federal 168gr. GM SMK BTHP).

This package here is all you need ^^^^

Otherwise get the Savage or go with a receiver and a quality barrel for a build the way you want it.

That's pretty much the set up I am planning on, except for the cheek piece anyways. I found a good deal on it but it came with a scope I wanted for another rifle. So I have to order a scope.
