Looking for a gun safe

So, I'm in the market for a gun safe that will hold at least 10 long guns and at least 5-8 handguns. I don't care whether the locking mechanism is elecvtronic or old school mechanical (though I would prefer to have an electircal system with a mechanical backup in case the electric system fails). I would like the safe to have a fire rating, too.

Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, I'm also NOT looking at breaking the bank.

Re: Looking for a gun safe

Cannon makes a line of cheaper fire rated value safes that can be gotten usually in the $600 to $800 range for a good one.

Take the advertised gun rated capacity & cut it in about half as most of the time the rated storage capacity is done with non scoped hunting rifles. So if you need to store 10 good scoped guns nicely, one of the 18 gun + safes would work well.

Not sure what your buget is, I picked up a nice Browning 25 gun safe from Bass Pro a while back for under $1,000. It's rated for 60 min and has the door rack storage which comes in pretty handy.

Check out Home Depot.
Don't just stop at what is on the floor, check it out in customer service and look at the books as to what they can order in for you.
If you are LEO, active military, or a disabled vet, you get cut some slack, like 10% or something, maybe more depending on your situation.
Just my thoughts. Regards, FM

That may be available at other Big Box stores if you qualify.
I don't know.
A safe is in my opinion a Big Box.
You might also check on delivery charges.
They may negate any savings on the purchase price.

Re: Looking for a gun safe

I have a Cannon that I have been very pleased with. Its a mid grade safe with the electronic push button code to open it. I haven't had a problem with it at all. I think at the time I bought it, it had the best rating on fire protection. I'm sure there have been some upgrades on their newer models along with other makes of safes also. The biggest thing I would consider is you 12 guns and buy an 18 gun safe you will eventually regret not getting one bigger. That seems to be the only problem with my safe is they don't make a safe stretcher so I can add more room to mine for more guns, lol. Guess it is about time to start looking for another safe myself.

BT, has it right! You're gonna find that: camera's, cash, jewerly, document's, key's... will all need a place next to you firearms. Since most home burglary's are crash in, carry out...all those little carryable's will be somewhat secure.

My B-I-Law bought an electric lock -I'd not buy one,I have 3 safes - it worked at the retail store. Got it home an hours drive and it would not even open; called the manufacturer 3 times before they sent some one to open it...2 wks later.

At one time I owned 10 per cent of all Pinned and Recessed 629's and my last three 629's were the reason I bought a safe. They crashed in, carried them out! After Insurance paid me, the next day I bought a heavy duty Am-Security safe, Key-locking dial....now it's full, to the top and to the sides.

There are more advantages to having a bigger safe than one can imagine!!!

Re: Looking for a gun safe

Find a local dealer and figure out what you want. Then wait for a bent and dent deal on it. A local shop here in BAMA has some of there so-called bent and dent safes marked down a good bit and in some cases in half of regular price. I've seen the 3 grand big boys going for $1800 or so but this also includes smaller safes.

PS most of these are in the LIBERTY name brand.

+1 on this.

Always buy a safe bigger than you think you need and buy the best safe you can afford. I have five gun safes and have only bought two of them new, check with your local safe distributors to see if they have any used trade-ins.
