Gunsmithing Looking for Advice?

Hi Folks,
Long story, I will make it short, ruined my back at work in 03, trying to get back to shooting, put togehter a 243WSSM AR platform to keep the recoil down. I havn't got it tuned as good as I want.
I was doing all right untill I watched Sky King's video where they were shooting a 50cal then a 7Mag then I think it was his dad shooting a bolt gun hitting the gong at 1000yds maybe longer, but the bolt gun was kicking about like a 22-250. So I got a hold of Cory and he told me it was a 7mmmWSM Gap with a GOOD Break. So the other day I trade for a cherry Rem 700ADL 7mag. I have been told that a Break on a 7 Mag won't help with the recoil. That is why I came here, you guys are shooting out to a mile and more! So if anyone will know if the Rem 7 Mag can be tammed you guys will know!! And I mean no disrepect to the guys on the other forums.
I would be great full for the help. Cory told me to call him any time but I don't like bothering guys!

A brake will absolutely tame recoil. And there are guys here that will tell just which ones will do it best and with the least noise. My 7 stw with a brake kicks like my 243 with 75 grain pills. It is horribly loud though. There are better ones around
now a days I am sure.

JP makes a massive brake it works well to.The other you may consider is a suppressor yes it is more money but it will tame the recoil and save your hearing.JP products are sold by brownell.

A big plus 1 to the JP recoil eliminator on a 7 mag. A friend and I swapped rifles for a station at Thunder Valley. Mine was a 243ai with an AAC suppressor, his was a 7 mag with a recoil eliminator. My rifle weighed about 2# more than his. The 7 mag was MUCH NICER to shoot than my 243. That cartridge has plenty of gas to make the brake work.

Basically you are going to trade recoil for noise with most any brake....

I'm sure a quality suppressor will do but they aren't cheap but, what is, when it comes to quality??? Thunderbeast is a great suppressor and its built here in Wyoming!!!!

If recoil reduction if your priority, don't run a can.

Thanks Guys, I will go check out the breaks at JP. Won't the barrel have to be took of the reciever to be threaded? I would think a person should have the reciever squared up at that time??? I sold my big South Bend lathe, and my small Jet doesn't have a big enough head stock to be able for me to make a fixture to put the reciever in. If I am going to do that much work, would it not be better to find a new action and a more quialified
caliber barrel for long range shooting, not comp. just me out shooting?

The 7-Mag is a very good long range cartridge, and if you want more you can have it reamed out to 7 STW. A better fitting stock with a good butt pad will also help tame some of the recoil. Adding a muzzle brake will lessen it even more. It really depends on if the barrel you have is capable of good accuracy. Shoot it and find out first.

Option two: If it were mine and I were to rebuild it, it would become a 300 Winchester Magnum. Add a good stock, true up the action and put a braked semi-heavy barrel on it.

If your back is like mine, you'll need a gun bearer for anything over ten pounds. If it is for shooting off the bench, then go with a Heavy Varmint taper or maybe even the MTU taper. Go ahead with the brake too.

No. Take off your scope and rail and ship the barreled action to which ever smith can take care of it the quickest for ya.

Add to Goin'Hot...Quality smith. The brake must absolutely be aligned with the bore and the exit hole bored accurately or YOUR accuracy will be non existant. Don't ask how I know.

Yep, you get what you pay for!! I think my best bet is to find someone that wants a nice ADL in 7 Mag. I think in the end, I will have exacty what I want in a rifle without wasting money having things redone!In the mean time I will put more time in getting my 243WSSM AR to shooting like it should!
So now I am back to looking and trying to decide what will do what I want and how I want it!
You guys have been just SUPER and I thank you all a lot!
I hope that i will be able to help others as you all did me!

All comes down to science. 7mm mags kick. You want a 7mm that is tame.....heavier barrel, brake, heavier stock, etc. If this rifle is a toting hunter, then you get kicked (maybe less with a brake but kicked). If it will be a target rifle (on a bench) then weight is not an issue. We all know the saying....an object at rest is harder to make move, hence weight. To tame it well, it comes down to inertia. Hunters get kicked once, target shooters get battered over and over, depends on your needs and wants.
