Looking for input on a build,

This will be my first center fire build.

The list I have made so far...

Rifle- Rem 700 SPS .308 20inch heavy barrel.

Scope- Vortex PST 6-24x50 mil mil, Vortex Anti-Cant Device.

Rail- Badger Ordnance 20 moa rail

Rings- Badger Ordnance ( what height do you think I will need)

Trigger- Thinking of a Jewell, but open to suggestions

Stock- Choate Tactical

Detachable Magazine- Thinking of the Wyatts, open to suggestions


Goals / Purpose of use... To have a high quality long range rifle (200-800yards) for hunting / local competitions. I am on a tight budget. So I am trying to get the most bang for my buck.

Sounds like a great start to learn from, just enough money in it to get a decent set up and figure out what you want next. Your bottom metal, CDI, PTG, Badger they are all good. You might also consider the Bushnell HDMR G2 Reticle, I have the pst but like the bushy better, and the FFP super snipers aren't bad either. Rings would be a medium height. I have jewell on all of my builds. Good Luck!

I would look into getting a b&c stock over the choate stock. They are much better, it looks like everything else will be good.

I know this might not be the answer you are looking for but i might suggest just getting a tikka t3 in 308 varmint/tactical/ctr any of which will work. dbm holds 5 rds which is useable, super smooth action, trigger is one of best factory triggers available. they shoot great from the factory even in the plastic stocks they come in.

Alternative would be to just get a tikka sporter in 260 and put a ss fixed 12x mil/mil scope on top. it would be about the same price.

Or

use the money from buying the fixed scope and have the tikka rebarreled to 260 or 6.5creedmoor.

You will have much more success hitting targets with a barrel/caliber upgrade than you will with anything else!!!

I have a choate tactical.

It is actually a VERY good stock, but to be honest, I much prefer the B&C M40 style stock.
Both have a full length aluminum bedding block. The Choate has two things going for it, the anschutz style rail and adjustable LOP.
Cost is a wash, portability goes to the M40.

A good start. Some cost saving advice
1.Unless you bought badger already, TPS rings are a good start. Saves cost and I haven't had any issues with them.I have found them easier to mount than badger as well. Don't get me wrong, Badger's rock ( i have them on 2 out of 3 rifles), but since this is your first build, see what you like and save for the next build when you know better what you like.
2. Timney, rifle basix or keep the stock Remmy trigger and have it adjusted (if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself). Jewells feel different than most triggers and take some getting used to. try someone else's if you can prior to purchase.
3. I don't have experience with Wyatt's dbm systems, but love the Newman Precision BM with AI mags.
4. +1 on the rebarrel to the .260. Save cost on the other components stated above and do this. It will get you more accurately out to 800 and even out to 1k vs. a 20 inch .308.

This is what I've learned over 3 custom builds anyway

Picked up a Rem 700 SPS Varmint today,

Threw my SS 16x MQ on it

Then found a 20 min rail for it

Need to take a pic of it with the rail and the scope...

Shoot it at 100 yards, with some cheap PPU 168gr ammo

The trigger SUCKS, the bullet hole in the right was ME

Here is the trigger pull weight

8 pounds 3/4oz.

Went out and shot it at 935 yards today, only had 7 rounds left, hit it twice. Did not know the rang while shooting, had to leave a car where we shot from and range back to it lol.

Went out and did some shooting at 200 yards, cross wind of 20-30 mph. shot 42, 42.5, 43, 43.5 gr of Varget pushing a 168gr sierra matchking.

This was the best one 43.5 gr I would like to think the flyer was me... on inch with out it.

its a start i guess....

I just loaded 50 168gr A-max with 43gr varget. 15 thousands off the lands. well see how they shoot this weekend.

Looks alot longer then Remington 150gr elcheapo ammo

I went through a similar process a few years ago and started with the remington 700 pss. After adjusting the trigger down to 3 lbs, I decided that it does anything I need it to do but as was already mentioned, Rifle Basix makes a great trigger for the money.

I also built mine for long range hunting and put a detachable 10 round mag on it but what I did not take into account was the load I was shooting. Many long range hunting bullets as you probably know are long. Both the Berger VLD and the AMAX are long enough that they may or may not feed right through a magazine. I bought a $300 piece of bottom metal and 10 round mag but the length of my bullets will only allow me to mag feed four rounds before they get hung up.

I also put a Vortex Viper PST on mine and I love it. It always tracts true and back to zero even on large elevation changes. I shot an elk 2 weeks ago and had to dial 22 moa to hit it, backed it down to zero and it is on and ready to go. I can't speak highly enough about the Vertex optics.

I am loading 46 grains of varget pushing a 175 grain Berger vld and it remains half minute out to 500 and under 3/4 minute to 1000. spend the time and money to develop a load that your gun likes..

Thanks for the info, I will be getting a pst when money allows

The bolt knob mod was a success. I really like how much easier it makes it to cycle

Went shooting today... I did not get any pictures of the 100 yard groups "DUR" But when i did my part it was right around 1/2 inch.

Changed a few things on the rifle, Put a 20x scope on it and a cheek riser. I like the way it works!

Went to a spot where I have got a few coyotes in the past. Looking for an opportunistic long range shot on one... after an hour. I decided it was time to go. So I to took a shot on a rock 669 yards away. First shot! man I love this gun!
