Looking for input on two classes of spotters

First would be spotters with a reticle available for the $1000 price range new or used- so off the top of my head that leaves me with the Leupold Mk4 and the USO Field Spotting Scope.

Second would be spotters without a reticle in the same price range, new or used.


Keep in mind when I say used I'm not talking about it shows up once every 6 months at that price and sells in 2.54 seconds.

I've used the Mk4 spotter as issued and was pleased with it for the most part (given I wasn't paying for it)- but I know the glass isn't the greatest. I'm leaning toward running with a reticle but due to limited selection and may end up giving that up and just going clean picture; which is the reason I'm looking for input on those as well.

Well lets hear what you have to say- What scope in each class would you buy with $1k to spend?

Forgot to mention- use is general spotting uses; observation, watching trace, spotting impacts, calling correction, ranging... Ranging and reticle correction may go by the way side.

I'm not some delirious paper puncher thinking I can spot .17 cal hits in the black at 1000m.


Also if you don't mind telling me why you'd chose the one you mention (compact size, clarity, objective size, max power, min power, brand reputation... whatever it may be)

I had a 12-40 Leupy, non Mark 4, eye relief was non existent and I sold it.

I don't know if you have to have a reticle, but if not save up a few more pennies and when a good Leica 62mm or Zeiss 65mm used comes along for about $1100-$1300 then snatch it up.

I have the Vortex Razor HD - but it does not have a reticle, however you can get a fixed power 30x eyepiece with a reticle if you wish.

Why do I like the Razor - it's a hell of alot of scope for the money. About half the cost of the Alpha glass. Some would say that it may be at the bottom of the, or close to alpha glass category. Another reason, Vortex warranty is well known. If there is ever an issue, they will take care of it - period. Note it is over the $1000.00 mark, but well worth every penny!
