Looking for Lyman 48WJS

Yep, watching that. Actually have one being held for me.
Better to buy one off people here that add to my entertainment.
Im looking to not mess with the wood at all.
I dont want a sight that will require a relief cut.
Im looking to use a Winchester 105A front similar to this but with a standard block not dovetail.....
The 48WJS will not require wood relief. I was thinking the slide is small but if (if) I ever used the irons Id hope to get at least 100 to maybe 300 yards out of them.
My primary sight is going to be the 1.25" Unertl Combination Target, next would be a Redfield 70 base, one inch rings and a Redfield 3-9X.
The irons are because I want one rifle equipped with belt, suspenders and designed like overalls...
Bit heavy for it but it would be a rifle capable to work anywhere in the western hemisphere - just dont get it too wet.....
Ill certainly inquire further. I know you are not just pulling that concern out of thin air. Thank you for having me check because I dont know what the hell Im doing.

The 48WJH is exactly like the WJS but has a "dog leg on the cross bar for a higher line of sight. It was for the target contour barrels with 17S type front sight similar to the one you pictured. The H for high S for sporter IIRC. I will send you a pic of one of my set ups with these sights. Don't think I have any extras as of last night. I sold so many last summer. They were not hard to find in the past and am sure we can locate some now. Demand may be higher as when I put out about 200 sights at the KC gun show the dealers rushed my table and had a feeding frenzy. Not sure what was going on with that. The sight screws are harder to get than the sights. Best to buy one with screws as you will go crazy trying to find or make them. Call if you have questions. Good luck with your project.

Won my bid on Ebay for the Win 105A front sight pictured above. Ill be ditching the dovetail base for a standard screw down style base.
Nice thing about the sight I bought is that it has a post front insert. Those are rare and Im guessing could sell for the $50 I paid for the entire sight.

Here is a prewar WJS....
This early WJS lacks the scallop on the lower edge of the block to allow it to fit over the wood. It requires relieving for the sight block and than because this example uses a long range slide wood needed to be removed for the slide to work.
Ill be using just a standard slide hoping I can use the sights from 100 to 300.
Am I missing the problem that the straight slide bar will not allow the aperture to "clear" the heavy barrel/scope blocks because it lacks the dog leg?

Your info is good about the wood removal issue. Early sights were a block and not cut out for wood. Later is scalloped and normally clears wood.
The WJS will work the issue you get is that it is for a standard weight barrel front sight height. The HB you have will result in a taller front sight. Then you will need to use a very short sight insert and it will not be centered. Will look odd. I use this set up on my Van Orden and Pre War Snipers match rifle. I also use it on my Winchester 52 squirrel rifle. All are Unertl and Lyman sighted. (Never know when you need to get up close and personal with a rouge grey squirrel?
If you intend to use it I think you will like the WH better. A non centered front sight looks odd and negates the advantage of peep type sight.

There is a WH on eBay just now ending Sunday but the price seems high. Might not be as there are 11 bids. Might explain why there was a mad rush to my table when I laid out 200 Lyman sights??
