Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

yep....i was thinking about a 260 or creedmore. I like 6.5

I have a grendel.

Is a 260 or creedmore really gonna give me a little more reach over 308?? I always thought of them as similar range as 308 but now that you mention it I guess it would give another 200-300 yds or so??? Is that about right?

Thing is a 260 isn't gonna reach 1500.....1200 maybe.

I'd like to be able to reach 1500 really.

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

the 115 DTACs would have to be single loaded to perform to their limits. Loading that in a mag would downplay the 115s.

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

if you don't mind me asking.

why have you gone completely to gas guns? just curiosity i can never see me getting away from bolt guns as a primary long range rifle.

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

When I built my 6.5 Lapua it came down to the Lapua and the Creedmore. Creedmore lost out down to unavailability of brass at the time. Just as happy with the Lapua. Damned near flat out to 300 yd.

My reason.
When they are right 1/4Moa and quick follow up without removing your eye from the scope in any position. They can be just as accurate as a bolt gun for most uses.
1000yd benchrest maybe not.

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

You can fit a .300 mag but it will be a RSAUM because the case is stronger for semi use. Right now the only mfr making one is Les Baer, but they have been offered by both Armalite and DPMS. only problem is that you can,t keep to many rounds in a mag (fatter cases want to pop out)and will likely be limited to 190 SMKs since the new 155 Palma likes to ride the lands and this is difficult out of a standard mag. Would like to know why GAP won't do a 7 short - do they feel it won't feed or isn't worth it because you'll seat bullets to deeply?

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

I know that Accuracy Systems makes a 300SAUM upper (+ others), I haven't used any of their products but have seen a few positive reviews. Their website has caught my attention more than once, but I have always found other things to spend my money on.

At 1000yds a 6.5x47 or 260 can have 100" LESS drop than a grendel and 20" less drift in a 10mph wind

Exactly what I have found. I love the quick follow up....and there is no loss in accuracy at all...that is well proven. Some people seem to experience a learning curve converting to as guns but I haven't had a problem Find the tryigger that works for you and use good shooting technique....hey...ask lowlight. Only plus with a bolt gun is less weight....and to tell the truth if you put your head to it you can shave the weight off a gas gun too. I just got my Grendel down to nothing....cut the barrel to 16 and had it fluted.

hey I love bolt guns too...I effing love good sticks period.....my credit card says so.....damn that was some expensive beer I say every other morning. :))

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

well haven't really quized GAP ....they just told me they won't feed reliably.

I am considering having accuracy systems do one. They have told me repeatedly they can do it and make it work and feed. When George at Gap tells me otherwise I tend to believe him....we all know him.

But I have no problems buying one from accuracy systems and if it will never work drive up to the shop and get my money back or take further measures.

That being said accuracy systems has been very straight forward and helpful....shit...if they can get that steep shoulder to feed reliably I'd love it....but so far I have never heard anyone say they got one that did. I have come across a few people that bought them.????whatever that is worth :))))

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

I would trust George, some of the guarantees on Accuracy Systems site rings of Counter Sniper... Haha, I think DPMS discontinued the SAUM because they couldn't get it to feed--I just wanted to point out the option.

I'm a big Hornady fan for factory loadings, so I think when reliability comes into play I would go Creedmore. It seems like a nice hunting round as well...

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

30 degree shoulders will feed as long as the case isn't too short and fat. The 6BRs and BRXs feed fine in a AR15 and the 6x47L and 6.5x47L feed fine in AR10s and our 12s.
IMO a 35 and 40 degree shoulder is asking for trouble at the worst time... When you need to shoot fast.

Re: Looking to do an AR build with a bit more reach

All interesting alternate calibers, and expect none will match the 308 in barrel life, but which ones of the ones posted do give decent barrel life (or not)? If I drive a bit, I can shoot to 1000 yards, and would like great accuracy, but not at the expense of super short barrel life.
