Nashville Tn.
Most of you on here probably do not know me, however I am looking for a bit of sound advice. The wife and I have recently pondered the idea of moving to Texas. I am currently unemployed and things are not really looking up here in Nashville. We are both looking for a change and I guess you could say a " New Start " We were recently blessed with our first child, 7lbs 4oz Laylah Kimber West. Healthy as a horse and doing wonderful. Just looking for opinions on location (family friendly) and job/career opportunities in these areas. I know for myself, here in Nashville there are a lot of areas that the average person has no business moving into. That average person wouldn't have any way of knowing this without being informed ahead of time. So that's kind of what I'm looking for. Just a little direction. Thanks for reading. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

Thanks for the heads up.. I'll look into it. I actually forgot to add that we are not just limiting ourselves solely to Texas. We are very open to wherever this takes us. TX was just my first choice. Thanks again.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

Frankly, I wouldn't move any place without first having a job there. That said, the hiring market has continually been solid in northern Virginia (a very gun friendly state). Moving will be expensive and could likely be a bad investment unless you find work quickly. I'd expand the job search, look on USAJOBS.COM for some government work, and not rush into a move that may not yield the desired results. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

Congratulations on a daughter. Occupation? I agree on not moving until you have a job...but Texas at the moment has a better job market than most. Not perfect, there is definitely some hurt in unemployment around. With a new family, I would consider moving where you might have in-laws or friends, but a lot of Texans do settle in & use their church as their "extended family". Biggest negative I find are people being superficially nice - friendly to your face then stab you in the back like my neighbor who just tried to report me for a non-existent code violation - although it was awfully nice of her to build that retaining wall on what my title & deed shows as my property LOL.

I personally love Texas - but I like heat over cold. Gun laws are great, we actually have a Castle Doctrine that basically prevents shot bad guys from suing.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

There are really only two places with jobs, DFW and Houston areas...everywhere else, well, it will depend what you have...

Good luck.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

X2 on Virginia. Very well managed state and excellent employment opportunities, particularly in tech sector in N Va. Maryland is also tops in IT opportunities. The whole area though offers more in jobs than many areas because, as much as I hate to say it, of the, proximity to DC. This is where everyone sends their money and a lot of it makes it into the surrounding geography. Just the way it is.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

If Texas, look at the Southeast region. From Houston east to Lake Charles, LA. There is a multitude of manufacturing plants along the I-10 corridor and they are always hiring. God Bless on the new addition to your family and best of luck.

You didnt say what your training/vocation is.

Virginia is a great place. Good people, good economy, beautiful terrain, and gun friendly. It may largely depend on whether you prefer to spend your money on heating, which youll do more of here, or cooling which youll do a lot more of in Texas. Good luck on your search, congratulations on the new daughter, and great post on the three E's. I had seen the spirals seperately, but never quite put it together like they did. Not pretty.

That considered, you might want to move to a place where you have fresh water on the land, and able to grow something or other most of the year.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

Texas has faired pretty well through most of this recession. Any of the major cities should have available employment. Houston or Dallas would prob be my first choice. San Antonio or Austin are great too.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

Look into the "Eagle-Ford Shale" in south central TX. If you are ok with working in the oilfield, you can start out making 60-80k a year and move up quickly. A friend of mine is making mid 100's with 1 year of experience. Not sure what it's like where you live, but Texas is pretty trashy. Especially farther south.

Interesting comment for a Texan. As a Virginian who lived off and on some 18 years in Texas, from Corpus to Del Rio to Austin, I would just say that (South) Texas is... different. It certainly is more Mexicanated, but you just have to learn to deal with a slightly different way of doing things...and be more patient. Texas, while further south than Tennessee. is not what you think of as 'The South'. Its Texas. As my dear old granddaddy Bud used to say "Them Texans is good folk, peculious, but good folk". And they do love GUNS

and have plenty of space to shoot them. I consider moving back to the Hills evry time the weather gets cold here. And where the hell else will you find people nuts enough to do this shit... [video:youtube]http://youtu.be/y7CYCyGEubA[/video] Never seen South Congress that empty.

Maybe a few days during the winter at most!
WI is gun friendly (CCW and class III), Eau Claire public schools are highly ranked nationally. And in a small city of 68-70,000 there is barely any crime!

Plus no killer bees, and cartel activity!

Forgot fire ants, rats, and cochroaches

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

congrats on the kiddo!

Stay the hell out of Idaho...these people don't want your kind round' here!

Just kidding. Love this place. The drivers could stand to use a tune up every now and then...only state I've ever seen that tells people to pull over after an accident. "Here's your sign!!!!"

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

Colorado, possibly?

Good gun laws, okay jobs, great outdoor recreation and four seasons...

The women here are ugly Porkasaurus Rexes, but then there always has to be a downside.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

I'd stay north of I40 and west of I35. I've been in Oklahoma 30 years and worked oilfield for 12. The heat and humidity make OK, LA, TX, NM, and AR almost unbearable from march till november. Fracturing is the focust right now in the Bakken formation in North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and Canada. The weather is nice up there almost year round if you can bear a few months of nut freezin. Myself, I've been considering Couer d'Alene Idaho for a while. I love just about everything about the state, namely the hunting and fishing. Montana is killer, and North Dakota is very nice as well if you enjoy lots of rolling hills and seeing tanker trucks everywhere. With a young un, I'd look at good schools and low crime rate.

Re: Looking to possibly make a geographical move...

Lots of great info here. We've researched most of the areas mentioned here. There are an unbelievable amount of things to consider that we'd not considered going into this. I did neglect to mention in my initial post my work history. I have been in the heavy equipment (both operating and mechanic) business for most of my working years. I'm 24. I believe, as of today actually, I may have a possible opportunity with Peabody in Gillette WY. I will know more tomorrow. I do want to thank everyone for the advice and suggestions. Its been quite helpful. As of now, my options remain open...
