I lost the bolt to my Browning A Bolt .300 WSM rifle. I've contacted Browning and they're quoting me to replace and headspace the bolt at 397 dollars. Is there some way around this? Can I purchase a used A bolt and have it installed/headspaced for less? I'm looking for any other options here that may save me some money. Thanks.

Re: Lost Bolt

If that's the best response you can offer Poke I'd prefer if you didn't respond to my threads in the future. I'm in a jam and hoping to find some alternative options, if any are available.

Re: Lost Bolt

0311 (infantry i assume?)...that really sucks about loosing your bolt and sorry for the a$$ above me who just wants to rack of post numbers with snide comments...there are a lot of good people on this board, its always been helpful for me in the past and i am sure someone who has constructive comments will see your thread and actually contribute...

for my advice...well Browning has good quality control, is a major manufacturer, i would think that based on that any bolt in the correct caliber would be a good match and may possibly drop in without needing headspaced (but i would still take it to a gunsmith to make sure it drops in)...you could check gunbroker, auction arms and the forums for anyone who has a spare bolt lying around...i don't know much about 300 WSM, its case head size may be something common so maybe another bolt could work...hope this helps man, i am more of a semi-auto fan than bolt guns, best of luck and sorry for your loss.

again, sorry for the first poster, i guess some people feel so inferior they must tear others down...hopefully a mod will say something to him about useless posts

I dont think Poke is trying to be an asshole here, what I think he means is that your probably in deep trouble as getting a replacement is'nt going to be easy.

Re: Lost Bolt

I found this on gunbroker, do you think it'll work:

"You are bidding on a Browning A bolt. We believe it fits a 300 Winchester mag or a 7mm Remington mag. 7 1/4". Used but in very good like new condition. Starting bid is $90"

Re: Lost Bolt

No, it will not work. That is a long action bolt, you need a short action bolt. You can have the bolt face opened, but the bolt you mentioned is too long. If you can find a used one, you should be able to have it head spaced to your barrel. It's not the most common action out there so numbers are not in your favor. I don't know if anyone offers an after market replacement like PTG does for Remington type actions. I think in the end you may be left with buying one from Browning. You will need a gunsmith either way, as a few what they can do to help you.

Good luck,
D.W.

Re: Lost Bolt

I realize this is going to be about as helpful to you as Poke was, but exactly how do you lose the bolt to a bolt-action rifle?

I suppose if you knew that... it wouldn't be lost now would it?

Re: Lost Bolt

I think the bolt heads on the Brownings are plated?? If so, I doubt one could be "opened up" or machined to handle the WSM if it isn't already. Sorry, but your options seem to be limited.

Re: Lost Bolt

You could buy this rifle new for $879.00 and then use your rifle for parts or sell it.

Short of finding your bolt, I don't see an inexpensive way out of this. I would be really surprised if you find a used bolt that will work, they just aren't that common. Short of buying a new rifle, I think you are going to be stuck having Browning do the work. I looked up the price of a new bolt on Brownells and the price Browning quoted you for the bolt and headspacing was cheaper than the list price on Brownells.

Re: Lost Bolt

If I decided to part the rifle, which parts are valuable? The barrel? Action? Trigger group? The search continues for the bolt. My family and I moved a couple of years back and since the government handled the move, I packed my firearms and ammo myself. Sometime during that move, the bolt was lost. I thought the rifle and bolt were both in the same case until I opened the case to find no bolt.

Re: Lost Bolt

This gun was given to me new by a friend two years ago. I'm not a hunter so the plan is to sell the firearm. If I have to pay for the new bolt and installation, I still think I could sell the rifle and come out on top.

Re: Lost Bolt

Unless stepping into the realm of a custom action, its been my experience that its tough to find a "bolt only." The word browning only complicates it further. I think your best/only option will likely be to order one from them. If they will sell it direct any decent smith can check headspace for you at a reasonable rate. I spect though they will want the gun due to the liability concerns.

Best of luck.

Re: Lost Bolt

I appreciate you all taking the time to read and respond to my thread. It looks like the best option will be to pay Browning to replace and install the bolt. Thanks again.

Re: Lost Bolt

If you're handy (or have the money and desire)you can also find a replacement bolt and re-barrel. Basically use what you have minus the barrel to build a custom rifle. I dunno. Like others said though, anything is a bit pricey when its got the Browning name.

And yet it still boils down to my original post about walking backwards.....

If my answer seems like post padding then a couple more and I will be able to sell in the PX. I will go out of my way to help a fellow shooter but I am not here to fluff up answers. The answer was and still is bend over and walk backwards cause its not going to be cheap and there isnt really anything you can do about it.

Re: Lost Bolt

Poke is right, and isn't being an ass or out of line.

"Life is tough, it's tougher if you're stupid."

Unless you need to move the rifle, I would say your best bet is to sell the rifle as parts, you'll come out ahead financially if you aren't in a crunch for cash and can wait for the right buyers, seeing as you're not interested in keeping the rifle and looking at this from a numbers only view.

Just about every non-collector firearm is worth more sold part by part.

Re: Lost Bolt

May have made some forward progress today. A fellow member of this forum has contacted me and my problem might be solved for about 60% of what Browning is charging. I got the repair quote today from Browning and have 20 days to respond. Thanks to all of you that offered helpful suggestions both here and in personal messages.
