Hey all. I'm just getting started in PRS Rimfire.
I'm new to this game, but have been shooting competitively in various games for 40+ years.
One thing I've learned is that in the beginning you don't know what you dont' know. You also don't know what works for you.
I'm trying to figure that out in a way where until I'm ready to step up to all the fancy stuff I can try different things without spending money I can't recoup.
My current setup is a Bergara B14R in a MDT XRS chassis. It balances very butt heavy. I taped some bags of bullets to the fore end to experiment with how much weight I wanted and how far forward I wanted it. (This was dry fire in my basement off improvised props like a step ladder.
I've started looking at commercial weight kits and found that they all run roughly $60/pound. I understand that most of them involve a fair amount of machining and that people deserve to get paid for their time. But there had to be something simpler. Especially considering that the material cost is somewhere around $4 to $6/pound
I think I've found the answer.
I just bought a 4 pound copper ingot on eBay for $33. Brass can be had for slightly more money. Brass is just an alloy of Copper and Zinc. Copper is very slightly heavier. But if you really prefer brass, it's out there. I saw a 5 pound block of brass for about $50.
My plan is to screw an ARCA clamp I already have, to the top of it and a short section of either pic rail or arca rail I also already have to the bottom of it. I'll clamp it to the front of my Arca rail and clamp my bipod to the bottom. I will play around with the weight on the rifle to position the clamps and the ingot for best balance.
I think I'll end up with a cool looking, inexpensive weight that will help me balance the rifle for very very little money.
One non-functional question is whether I block sand it to make it smooth and square, of if I use it "as cast". Either way, I'll probably shoot it with some clear lacquer to keep it shiny.
