I have been registered here since 2007 and have been reading sporadically but now I am finally getting into a precision type rifle. I am a gun guy, mainly AR platform, Glocks, and CZ pistols. I just ordered my optic/base/rings today, so hopefully I can assemble everything this weekend. I am trying to be budget minded as I am not certain how much I will get into precision shooting. Here is my setup:
Remington 700 SPS Varmint left hand .308 - purchased used, looks like new condition, has the crappy plastic stock
Badger Ordnance left hand base 20 MOA - I splurged on this because it will be a permanent part of the setup not replaced during future upgrades. I also considered Nightforce and EGW bases.
SWFA 12x42 fixed optic with butler creek covers and sun shade - reviews look great and many recommend it as an entry level bang for your buck piece that is very serviceable. I wanted decent glass to shoot mainly 100-300 yards
SWFA SS-Tac 30mm rings - I was going to purchase the TPS rings, but they were out of stock. The guy at SWFA recommended these to match their optic
Total cost including the rifle is $1039.
I know the stock on the Remington is less than high quality. I have seen some threads about adding material to stiffen it, or I may find something better in the classifieds and upgrade. For now the optics were the priority so I could go use the rifle. I do plan on bedding the base if there is any gap, but I do not have the equipment to lap the rings.
I have a couple of other scoped rifles as well:
S&W M&P-10 .308 wearing a Weaver 3-15x50 EMDR in a LaRue mount
Ruger M77 Mark II left hand .30-06 wearing a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40 - not used much as I don't hunt
Ruger 10/22 Target Stainless wearing a crappy Simmons 3-9x40
Some may wonder why I am not immediately stealing the Weaver 3-15 for my new Remington 700. I will get there eventually, I think I want to put a SWFA SS 1-6 on the S&W but I can't afford to spend $1000 on that glass now. The SWFA stuff seems to hold its value, so when the time is right I can sell the 12x42 and upgrade accordingly. I can easily afford the 12x42 now, so it will get me shooting.
Thanks for reading.
