Hey, I've been reading this forum for a while, and it seems like there are some very knowledgeable members on here who can perhaps help me pick out a rifle.
The application will be for personal fun, and also a LE/SERT rifle. I want good accuracy to 500+ yards, semi-automatic action for a quick follow-up, and it (unfortunately) must be in a standard caliber or my superiors won't let me use it at work. So I'm thinking 7.62x51 (.308). Oh, and because it'll be suppressed at times, I'm considering a piston gun. Feedback on that is very welcome, I have no experience with gas-piston actions.
As much as I love the grand old M14, I need a rifle that will be both easy to pull accuracy out of, and relatively light. I need to be able to carry it up ladders, shafts, and multiple flights of stairs with full gear and my PDW, which will prob. turn out to be a MP5--thus my concern with weight. Those of you who can tell me the weight differences between the REPR, OBR, and an M1A (with say, a JAE-100), please do so.
I'd like to get some comparative range reports, but I haven't heard of anyone doing a shoot-off. I'm thinking 20" barrel, but if there is little to no difference between the 18" and 20", I might consider the 18". The longer barrel should only make a difference at long range (right?), which is not likely to come up in my urban LE environment, but is more for personal practice/target shooting fun.
Any other factors...this is, I hope, going to be a lifetime-keeper rifle, so I'm willing to spend a fair chunk on a good rifle and optics. Also, the dept. may cover a part of it, I'll have to try to talk them into it.
However, it's not like my uncle just left me 10K (eye-roll), so I DO want to get the most out of my money...a PSG-1 is off the table.
If you all have any other ideas on good options for me, please let me know. I've looked at the KAC rifles, but they seem both overpriced and hard to come by. I'm not real familiar with DPMS, but their LRT-SASS looks okay...I just don't recall hearing much good about their ARs. The AR-10 rifles seem quirky, different mags, etc.
Anyhow, let's hear some ideas!!
Thanks!!
RJ
