The extractor on my custom Remington Model 700 broke. It is the older, riveted extractor. I want to have it replaced with the same, not retrofited with another extractor type. Can pretty much any decent gunsmith do it, or would I be better off going to IBA/GAP/?? My concern is the bolt face potentially being damaged in the process, versus down time and/or cost. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Why would the bolt face be damaged replacing a riveted extractor? It's a pretty straightforward and simple job. Drill the swaged portion of the old rivet, drive it out, remove the remnants of the old extractor, insert new extractor and rivet. Peen the new rivet using a rivet anvil made for this and grind the top of rivet flush with bolt. Test. Not saying somebody couldn't screw it up but a competent gunsmith that works on Remingtons has probably done this many times.

I saw that Remington factory instructions call for using a Dremel or files to dress the rivet head and/or contour the rim of the extractor as needed. That would necessitate metal removal work extremely close to the bolt face. http://www.brownells.com/userdocs/learn/Inst-562 Rem.pdf

A fella handy with a file and a piece of 3/16th thick flat steel, can make an anvil to stake the rivet. The problem is adjusting the extractor to put the ramp (extractor lip), at the edge of the bolt face. Just to get the extractor into the bolt face will bend it somewhat. Once inside the bolt face, are you to stake it, then use picks to adjust, or adjust before pinning? Anyone out there with some experience with this. I am remote, need to do my own work because of it. Any “mation” would be appreciated.
