Sidearms & Scatterguns M14 Bayonet Restoration

My son inherited a Korean war era M1 Garand Bayonet from his Grandfather. Overall it's in pretty good shape except for some rust. These bayonets seem to be fairly common so rather than let it continue to rust we are thinking about restoring it. The plan is to use CLR to remove the rust and then clean the metal up and repaint the metal with matte black Rust-Oleum and put it back together. Doe this sound like a reasonable plan? Any other suggestions for it?

I'd bead blast it before I'd try to use a chemical to remove rust.

I think the Bayonet is for a M1 Garand not an M14. The M14 was not in service in the early 50's

You are correct, it is for the M1.

Dern, I was hoping someone was selling a M14 (M-6) bayonet, thats the only one I don't have.

I have one for my 1917 Enfield, 1903a3, M1, M1 Carbine, M16a1, and the newer M16a2

My M1A is the only one I don't have a bayonet for.

I'd say media blast it and put a proper coating on it. Below are some before and after picture of a knife I cleaned up for my uncle (he got the knife from another guy in group while they were in Turkey). This one was just masked off and media blasted (no coating), then I wrapped the handle for him with some waxed linen since he didn't like how slippery the handle got when I got wet.

For the M1 bayonet, either media blast if off after masking off anything which the media would damage, then either coat it or if it can be completely disassembled, you could parkerize it.

That's my recommendation anyways.
