I decided to give the SO's M14 a makeover. I like the way it looks, but I think it may be a shade too dark for this area. There is a wide variety of scenery around here, so one pattern would be pretty difficult to blend in with. Colors are standard Krylon camo, khaki, OD, and brown. Grass was used as a template.

The sling, receiver and barrel obviously stand out a bit

Great thing about Krylon... don't like it? Repaint it.

Looks really sexy the way it is. But if your serious about blend and your pics represent your std. environment, I'd go back to khaki and then a little less frequency of OD and a lot less of the brown and back them both off in distance from the stock when you spray so as to get more of a spatter than a solid. It'll blend great. Sort of like this:

As you can see, a little bit of OD & Brown go a looong way. I think in our locale a little lighter is better than too dark.

I agree. I think it would have helped to have a frame of reference while I was doing it, like doing it in the middle of where I want it to blend. At home, without an objective reference, I focused more on how the paint, whatever the color, was landing on the stock.

Thanks for the advice. I'm about ready to nut up and paint the whole thing. How has the Krylon held up on your barrel?

Re: M14 Camo

Yeah, camo always looks different in the garage!

Krylon is not holding up great. Talked to a couple other guys, and they just keep spraying it over. I'm probably going to strip the metal parts after hunting season and at least do the base layer in Duracoat. The Krylon just does not adhere to metal the way it does to plastic or fiberglass. It's got chips all over and the barrel is stainless, so they glint in the sun.

I love the M14 and M1A. Got to shoot both when I was younger. It'll look great fully camo'd, but there'll be purists that will cry "horrors!"

Good Luck

That one is a TRW, so I might have to watch my back after the paint hits the receiver.
