Re: M1a in Carbon Fiber

I am also curious on the weight reduction and if that weight reduction makes the recoil impulse more noticeable? Seems like a nice stock although something about the lines of it doesn't quite fit with my eye. Of course nothing looks better than awesome performance so if it works go with it. I'm mostly curious to see if the reduced weight makes the "handiness" outweigh any change in performance due to potential increased felt recoil, like speed of follow up shots.

Re: M1a in Carbon Fiber

That is very cool, but I would like more details.

1) Did the gun group better, worse or the same than a standard stock when you put it in the carbon fiber?

2) Is the stock bedded, or is it a drop-in like a USGI fiberglass?

3) What is the weight savings over a standard stock?

Thanks!

Re: M1a in Carbon Fiber

I think these have been out for a while, they have been on his website and it breaks down how much they weigh etc. It is a bedded stock. No info on shot groups, just info on the stock itself and it's components. The website says they were debuted at the '08 shot show, but I have not seen any myself and it doesn't seem like anyone has posted up anywhere on having one. I did find an article from '08 where they fondled the one at SHOT and said it was shockingly light, but they didn't get to shoot it. I also saw other posts indicating they don't seem to be available yet. They do take ar-15 grips and stocks, which is nice.

Re: M1a in Carbon Fiber

I talked to him a few months ago. He told me the one he was working on on his bench was about 8.75 lbs. But it still had a bunch of extra rails around so it might be possible to lighten it further. On the other hand, I forgot to ask what kind of a barrel it was, so it might have been a light barrel...

When I heard the weight, I tried to retro-calculate the weight of the stock - it looks like it was a touch over 2 lbs, which is not much lighter (or any lighter?) than a light Manners or Bell and Carlson (McMillan says the A5 can be obtained at 2.5 lbs). But I could well be wrong. Although since a regular Springfield Scout can be had for 9.3 lbs in some configurations, the weight benefits do not seem so spectacular. On the other hand, if that was a heavy barrel, the M21 configuration from Springfield comes up at 11.6 lbs, so suddenly the weight benefits look much better...

In the end - I guess my numbers aren't very authoritative:) Someone (...) should try to get the skinny from McCann Industries. I have also looked around several times since (as late as last week in fact), but have not found a solid review of a production model anywhere.

Btw - at the time, the site did say that it was epoxy bedded.

Re: M1a in Carbon Fiber

The rifle w/scope and mount weigh 9lb 11oz.
spswatip is correct the stock requires an epoxy bedding. I have only used a red dot scope on it so i really don't have much information as to grouping before or after. As far as "handiness",I think it handles very well, after all, it still weighs over 9 lbs. As I said, this stock was from Richards first run. He was making them in small batches 10-12 at a time maybe. For those of you who did not know, Richard McCann passed away 2 weeks ago. I spoke with his wife Debbie and she said that McCann Industries will continue on and produce most of their products. I don't know if they will continue making the Carbon Fiber stocks or not.
