Today I took my M1A scout out to the range with 147gr South African ammo. I heard the ammo was ok with decent accuracy. I loaded my 20 round mag with 5 rounds. Every round fired and ejected just fine until the last round. The round fired and the bolt locked to the rear but the casing was stuck in the chamber. I thought oh maybe this is the extractor problem people talk about. I released the bolt forward and then the bolt was stuck and would only move 1/4in back. Range day lost because my dumbass only brought one rifle.. I brought the rifle home and used a rubber hammer and knocked the op rod handle then the round popped out.

Has this happened to anyone else? could anyone offer any insight besides using better ammo. I would like to maybe use this ammo in another rifle.

*also as I look at the casing that was stuck it has carbon built up at the top of the casing where the bullet seats, could this have been the problem.

Re: M1A scout FTE.

Replace the extractor with a USGI extractor and polish the bore.

This is a great time to tear the rifle down so you can clean & grease it really well.

Good luck

Re: M1A scout FTE.

rifle has been properly cleaned and lubricated, I am ordering a usgi extractor but what else could of caused the casing to get stuck in the bore? any more ideas?

Re: M1A scout FTE.

The M1-A has strong extraction when equipped with a GI spec extractor. The after market extractors are often cast parts that may not be to spec. If they are, they will work fine until they break.

Examine your extractor face to see if the claw is broken or chipped...that is fairly common. Examine the underside of the claw to see if the gripping area is flat and not broken or worn.

The other issue with these rifles is keeping them well maintained and the chamber clean... that's why they issue a chamber brush in the cleaning kit.

Re: M1A scout FTE.

My Springfield M1A had what they described as "a rough bore" and they polished it during one of it's trips back to the factory for warranty repair. Use the chamber brush to polish/clean your bore until it shines and see what happens.

Re: M1A scout FTE.

probably just cheap ammo. Slight overpressure causing the case to stick. Check the brass for signs of overpressure around the primer pocket and look for splits around the case neck. 3rd world countries aren't known for producing the most reliable/consistent ammunition in the world.
And bring a rubber mallet with you when you go shot next time!

Re: M1A scout FTE.

In the future, there's also the boot-stomp method to extract a stuck case from the chamber.

Simply place the butt of the rifle on the ground, grab & hold by the muzzle and use the heel of your boot to kick the op-rod.

I've used that trick and highpower matches in the past and it works fine.

I prefer the "pogo stick" method. Much easier to control the muzzle that way, especially with regard to your ear and everything inboard of that.
