How do I tell if I have a headspacing issue ? My bolt roller popped off my M1A Scout . Op rod shows excessive wear and there is an odd dent at the 12' oclock position on the breach face

Re: M1A Scout Problems

wish I could help. I also have a M1A scout, but haven't experienced what you have. If no one can help here, which I'm sure someone here can, try here -M14HDW forum

Re: M1A Scout Problems

What you are describing does not sound like a head space issue.

The bolt roller needs to have clearance to the receiver...that is a common problem with factory rifles because they don't check this, but sometimes the rollers just come off regardless.

As to the other issues it is hard to tell what you are referring to without examining the rifle, or some pictures.

If all else fails you can always send it back to SA.

Re: M1A Scout Problems

Shoot H2O man a PM. He has a tremendous amount of M14/M1A knowledge and may be able to pin point your problem. Sorry I can't help further.
And If you do need to send it back to SAI they will take care of you. I had to send back a 1911 EMP due to failures, called them up, they set everything up with FedEx, shipped it out and it came right back to me.
Their Customer Service is top notch.

<span style="text-decoration: underline">Good advice.</span>

My Scout M1A required four (4) repairs under warranty.

I parted out that M1A rifle and now own an assortment of M14s custom built by SEI for me on Norinco and Poly Tech receivers.

Good luck.

Re: M1A Scout Problems

To the OP,

How many rounds have you put through the rifle? When is the last time you removed the op rod and greased the bolt roller and roller recess in the Op rod?

The only time I have seen the rollers "pop off" was when the stud on the bolt was:

1 - worn out due to lack of grease which ruined the roller, bolt and op rod or

2 - the Factory SA "cast" bolts wore down prematurely. SAI used some pretty questionable bolts for a while and they wore quickly due to "soft" material but they have since started using better products.

A GI bolt would fix that issue if kept greased.

The dent on the breach face is more than likely caused by the extractor smacking it when the bolt closes, typically a cast SAI extractor that does not have the right relief angles cut, again, a USGI extractor will more than likely keep that from happeneing.

SAI will make repairs but its doubtful they will install USGI parts. They will put a new bolt and probably an Op rod in your rifle and send it back. If it were me, I would have it fixed and when you get it back, put a USGI bolt, roller and extractor in your rifle by a competent gunsmith and keep the SAI parts for spares.

This is why M1A's with genuine USGI parts are much more valuable to someone who has worked on them or shot them much. Smith Enterprises and LRB are the only "aftermarket" companies that make parts on Par with USGI ( actually often better ) than the original. But as anything in this world, good and cheap do not often co-exist so expect to pay considerably more than a Springfield Inc. Part.

"The firing line" forum is a good place to look for some GI parts

Hope this helps.

Re: M1A Scout Problems

Actually, they are not hard to do if you have some basic skills and a headspace gauge.

If you want, I will loan you a go and no go gauge and you can drop in a good GI bolt and op rod. Just need to verify the headspace and your good to go.

If it does not headspace, then it gets a little tricky but I can help you out if you need.

Just PM me and I will help anyway I can.

Not really, find some HP shooters, then locate Craig Parker. Another option is Mark Ford, another HP shooter. Parker was a civilian shooter but did good work on their guns. Mark Ford was my armor for NM M14s when I ran the AK NG Marksmanship Unit.

Mark is School Trained in NM M14s. He still shoots High Power.

Also, in HP Circles find Ron Flashhacker. (Best shooter I had on my team, ended up shooting for the All Guard Team) He still runs HP Clinics in the Anchorage Area. He'll get you lined up.

As for the roller, I got my M1A in 1977, shot the heck out of it since I started HP that year. Still shoot it, been through some barrels but never a problem with the bolt. Like others said, its a maintance thing. Keep it greased.

Thats the best idea, let the manu fix the mess.

They have a good Customer service reputation, probably fix it for free for you.

Too many bad experiences years ago with SAinc never again for me.

Nice SIG H20 LOL looks familiar

Re: M1A Scout Problems

I keep seeing problems with SAI Rifles, which worries me since I have a Scout as well.

<Side Note>

Not a head space issue,

# 1 cause of roller jumping off is opp rod alignment to roller, during firing cycle.

SA sells a lot of them and there is the occasional issue. Most of them work. They stand behind them to their ability to do so.

Buying any factory rifle out of the box is not the same as one hand-assembled by a highly skilled smith. Custom M1As can cost upwards of 2x-5x what the SAs do. SA builds their rifles to a price point...you get what you pay for.

That is true. One from Smith Ent. could be 3k and more.
