I have recently traded for an M1A SOCOM II. It has the VLTOR rail system. Was wondering if y'all have any awesome recommendations for an optic? Im thinking like 200 yards max. Im thinking something similar to a red dot but I'm open to suggestions.

does a scope hanging over the bolt cause problems? Since I'm shooting it I can't really tell where the path of the ejecting brass takes it. (not sure if that sentence makes sense.)

do you have the socom II standard Vltor rail or extended? The extended actually goes over the bolt and attaches to the stripper clip guide, if you have a standard rail put a Larue SPR backwards or just run a T1 T2 type red dot to keep it light

standard. didn't even know the extended rail was a thing.

I have a scope that is in a LaRue mount that I feel like, when I put it on the rail as far back as I can, gives me good eye relief and everything. It just hangs over the bolt in a way that makes me concerned the brass would deflect off of the moving parts containing the ocular lens and that just kinda gives me the heebees

Brass typically ejects out and forward at the 1-2o'clock position when the gas system is operating correctly. Sometimes it will go out closer to 3 o'clock.

Large windage turrets can interfere with ejection but it isn't an issue in most cases.

I have a Scout model with a 1-6x mounted over the ejection port and I’ve never really noticed any heavy brass marks on the windage turret cap, although there are some. Most of the brass marks are on the front face of the charging handle along with dings in the wood.

I use to have this exact model. I ended up buying the extended vltor rail and mounting a little Leupold mark 4 2.5-8x36. Worked great for this rifle. If you don’t like that heavy quad rail you can sell that thing and just get the extended rail.

I had one for a while and used an AR-style cantilevered scope mount mounted backwards with a 1-6x scope and it worked just fine. I also used a Burris Fastfire mini red dot mounted directly on the forward rail and it worked great too. They are fun little rifles...kinda wish I still had mine.

Because of that rail system, a long eye-relief scope should be used. Depending on your application, either a scout/pistol scope or a red-dot/ACOG type scope would also work great. Depending on your budget, this may limit you to your choice. A Tasco TRS-25 is small, some what rugged, and so light you'll never notice the weight.

Optic over the bolt isn't an issue in the slightest.

M1As are notoriously difficult to mount optics and before you know it you've got to chin weld you get a proper perch.

My old man remedied the perching issue by adding a stock wrap that brought his head high enough for a proper cheek weld using a 1-6 optic on a standard mount.

My advice? Get the lowest stripper clip mount you can, the extended VLTOR rail would work, and use the lowest, highest quality rings you can....and rock a nice 1-4.

Curious as to who here has suppressed their M1A Socom? Looking at a SOCOM II with the standart VLTOR rail. Looking to add a can via a Schuster Adjustable Gas Plug System. Would love to see pics and read details of your set-ups

IMO the scope that belongs on any battle rifle is the NF NX8 1-8.

It is simply perfect. At low mag, it is a very functional red dot. At 8x Im reliably ringing the 400yd gong at my local range w/ a 10in AR pistol.
Sized right for a rifle you maybe packing around w/ the 30mm tube. It replaced red dots/ fixed power scopes/ bigger class of 1-8’s (I.e. S&B shortdot) for me.

I picked up my nx8 as an open box demo for $1,400 shipped.

I have the Smith enterprises mount on my M1a (built in 2006 on old heavy tech) The mount is steel & is heavy....but it’s a m1a. Everything is heavy.

I tried. I used the Delta P Designs SOCOM thread adapter which is a beautifully made piece and pretty much the best thing going for the SOCOM.

However, my SOCOM did not have evenly cut threads and could not be suppressed without being sent out to be rebuilt. I did check it with an alignment rod before firing- it would have shot the endcap off. Went through a month of trying adapters, and having new adapters sent before I figured out it was the rifle. Springfield did not care as it was fine as factory configured.

The op rod also hammered the receiver even unsuppressed, so I would suggest a schuster adjustable plug.
