I'm planning to start shooting competitions with my new M1A SuperMatch. I hope to work my way up to the 1000 yd Camp Perry matches. With a 1 in 10 twist will I need to change ammo through the different ranges or can I come up with one round suitable from 200 - 1000 yds? What is a suitable commercial or reload for a gas-gun that will still be supersonic at 1000 yd. and not damage my rifle? Any help appreciated.

I can offer my M1A 'Loaded' 1Kyd load.

Rem Brass, Fed GMM LR primer (210M)
175SMK, 2.815" OAL actual.
42.2gr IMR4064

Worked quite well in Issue Grade, 'Loaded', and SuperMatch'

Will stay supersonic to 1Kyd, and also works in closer, but you may want to use a lighter bullet from 600yd inward. I didn't, so you're on your own there.

41.2 grains H4895, WIn case, WLR primer, 175 Sierra matchking.
Easy on the rifle, easy on the shooter and fully 1000 yard capable.
If you take a Supermatch to Perry you'll need a porter for your Cojones cuz they're too big to walk around with on your own.

Here is another perspective on bullet selection for match shooting including the M1a. In my M1As I shoot 135s at 200, 168s at 300 and 185s at 600. Kind of busy with ammo, but the 135s are hard to beat in sitting rapid, and the 185s fly real well.

Interesting read. Thanks.
My load data looks like it matches their 175BT service rifle data closely in terms of velocity and trajectory.

81ST, what are you running those 185's at?

My 185s are running at 2530.

We were shooting at Capitan, New Mexico two years ago as we're tuning up for Camp Perry, at 600 yards in the middle of the string there was a pick up which some of us did not see since we were in the shot execution. The guy shooting a 6XC with 115s caught a scratch 10, the guy shooting an AR with 80s shot a 7 just barely out of the 8 ring and I caught a scratch 9 with my M1A shooting my Berger 185s. Remember the scoring rings are just 3 inches apart through the 8 ring. BC does matter.

Re: M1A Super Match ... best ammo or recipe for 1000 y

Does anyone know of any ballistic charts or tests done to determine how much velocity is lost on a semi-service vs bolt action rifle?

81STFACP ... The Berger site you provided does offer a good approxation.(however the palma rifles have 30" barrels vs my 22") What is your twist rate. Mine is 1/10". Is mine too fast for the lighter bullets you suggested at the closer ranges?

What am I sacrificing with a 1/10 vs 1/11 or 1/12 twist rate ... velocity? I know it stabilizes a heavier bullet.

You guys are really helping me in developing my first rounds for my new 'honey'. Hope all the questions aren't annoying. I could shoot-out a barrel trying to figure all this out on my own.
Thanks

Re: M1A Super Match ... best ammo or recipe for 1000 y

My number 1 gun is a 10 twist M1A, and I shoot 125s and 135s for short range with no problem, but I limit myself to the 185s for mid range+. The velocity I quoted 2530 is out my 10 twist M1A

BTW, I also have M1a with 12, and 11 twist. And I have alternately shot them the last two years.

81STFACP
Thanks for the good info. I was a little scared of using a 10 twist on the lighter bullets.
Got any recommendations on the lighter bullets velocity for 200 -300 yd range? ( I can be a pest! ... I know. )
Thanks again.

Re: M1A Super Match ... best ammo or recipe for 1000 y

I ran the 125s and 135s anywhere from 2700 to 2950 with no problem. Even the low speed ones cycled the bolt no problem. My favorite load for my number one gun is 44 grains of 4064 pushing the 135s.

Try IMR 4895 or 4064 start with 42 for the 4895 and 43 for the 4064 and run your matrix to see which load your rifle likes. You can clean the rapids with these small pills.

When I am lazy to prepare brass I will just pull the military slugs from the South African MilSurp ammo, resize the necks with powder in 'em and seat the 135s in. Use either Bergers or SMKs. This combo shoots. Good enough to clean the reduced targets and the SR targets with ease.

Use a lot of stick ums even shooting the small pills

Re: M1A Super Match ... best ammo or recipe for 1000 y

81: I've seen a friend that shoots for the military do the bullet pulling thing. He calls it "ghetto" match ammo. They take plain ball, pull the bullets and dump the powder and laod match bullets. Says it shoots great, he shot it at Perry a few weeks back so I guess it's GTG.
