I watched a documentary last night "Medal Of Honor" dated 2008, which covered many men (and a woman) that received this recognition. I highly recommend the movie. It gave a history of the Medal dating back to the Civil War.

Twice while showing footage of the Korean conflict, were combat shots of an M1c in action. Rarely do you see footage of a sniper rifle in the old combat films. FYI.

Originally (and during the ACW) the CMOH was the only award and the rest (like the Gillmore medal) were privately issued. The Confederacy didn't issue anything butt placed the soldier's name on the Roll of Honor. The Purple Heart is the first general issued medal by the aarmed forces.
