Hey guys. Reposting this from the main bolt gun section as someone recommended it may get better service here. I have been considering getting a 308 bolt gun as a trainer to supplement my AI. I'm a bit of a clone nerd when it comes to military firearms and have always loved the looks of the M40A3 and A5 rifles. I have a question for the owners of those rifles regarding where to get them built.

I understand that GA Precision makes a more or less turnkey clone but I have also seen some people with builds from PWS at Quantico. I was curious how one goes about doing that? Also, I was curious what other reputable builders for those rifles anyone might recommend, rated from good to better to best?

Lastly, what would a "proper" serial range be for a clone, In case I need to supply my own receiver.

Thank you all.

The easy button would be GA

RWS would be another candidate

Crescent Customs - Moon could do a great job but I would check his backlog.
Last I heard he was waaaay out.

And last but most definitely note least!
Would be Ern in Florida his attention to detail and customer relations is second to none.

Good luck

What’s the name of the shop of this Ern fella for reference?

Well he used to be at Altus but he opened his own shop.

I do not have name or location yet.

Will update when I have further information.

Maybe someone who sees this can give you better intel.

I opened shop since leaving GA Precision in 2015.

I was co-located with Altus until recently. We both needed room to expand.

I am still the contracted Altus rifle builder (have been since 2015)......but now work from my home shop with frequent visits to Altus for dropoff/pickup/etc.

I am happy to build your rifle, but if you are wanting a clone specifically......it is tough to pass up George and crew.....last I heard he has multiple usmc2112 builders there. Who better to build a clone???

How ya been doing Ern?

I did send all my parts down to GAP just a few weeks ago for a M40a1 build. What I don’t have GAP has and will put it all together.

I know not a A3 or A5 but they either have or can get all the clone parts like Ern said.

Frank,

The family and I have been doing well here in FL.

Between the new (to me) house, honey-do list from the wife, and Altus keeping me loaded with work. I stay plenty busy.

I need to get up and see all the Bartlein crew again. I bet a lot has changed since the 10yr celebration. The car collections alone are worth the trip.......haha.

Just keeping my head down and staying laser focused in my own little world. I haven't even been to SHOT since leaving AZ in 2018.

Hope all is well with you and your family.

You and Trace should be close to retirement by now right?......haha.
