Hey everybody,

i recently got my first AR-style rifle which is a Haenel CR308 with a 16,5" barrel. (german made, similar to the HK MR308)
I tested it with my Kahles K16i but that scope is reserved for the AR15 I will get in the next weeks, so I want to step up to a optic with a higher magnification for the 308.

The thing is i got a Steiner M7Xi MSR-2 on a rifle i want to sell so I could just use that but I'm unsure if this choice will have any downsides.
I mean I looked at the PMII ultra short and yes its like 2" shorter but not even 2oz lighter....

The rifle will be primarily used for static Precision shooting and occasionally for long range out to 800 yrds.
I imagine to get something like a dmr rifle at the end. (or at least it should look like a dmr rifle)
A Atlas Bipod and a B&T Rotex can will be added to finish the build.

What would you do? Sell the rifle with scope and get a compact scope like the S&B PMII ultra short or just buy a quality offset mount and use the M7Xi?

Thanks for helping!

I was in a similar predicament until recently when trying to decide on a scope for my SCAR 20s which I plan to use much the same way as your Haenel. I decided the S&B 5-20 US was the best option but I ended up going with a Steiner M5Xi 3-15x at less than 1/2 the price of the S&B.

Like you’ve already identified the Steiner is only marginally longer and heavier. Judging by my experience with the M5 I doubt you are giving up much to the S&B with the M7. I do think you’ll be taking the worst of it financially if you sell the rifle and Steiner as a package and buy the S&B vs selling the rifle and keeping the Steiner. Even if you sold the rifle and kept the Steiner only temporarily and upgraded to the S&B if the M7 didn’t serve your needs you’d probably make more money than selling both as a package.
