Afghanistan
hey guys im new to the site. ive just been deployed to afghanistan. im a sniper that as you probably can guess doesnt get a lot of support from my unit (as a lot of snipers dont.)
they've given me an m14 ebr (and an m24 on the way) but no special ball or long range ammo. all ive got is the m80 ball. i know that i cannot expect the same amount of consistency or range out of the m80 and i was just wondering if anoyone had any info about ballistic differences between the m118 sb and the m80 ball. any help is appreciated.

Re: m80 ball

M-80 uses an FMJ bullet with a nominal weight of 149gr, at a velocity of 2750fps. Its trajectory can be relied upon to match the iron sights graduations to an effective range of about 500yd.

M-118 uses a Sierra 175gr MatchKing, at a velocity of 2550fps.

The above info is taken from Cartridges of the World.

Assuming a 100yd zero and a scope height of 2" above the bore, trajectory info is as follows:

Windage deflections are figured for a 10mph wind of full value, or 90 degrees to the trajectory.

Re: m80 ball

M-80 can be made to work in the M-21 (M-14s).

I use to run sniper schools for the National Guard. When we first replaced the M1C/Ds with the M-21 all we could get was the M-80s. It shot just a smiggin lower then the M-118 (about 9 inches or 1.5 MOA lower) at 600 yards. If one was to play with the data in BC tables, write up the differances in you data book you can (as in Switchblade's sig. line)Improvise, Adapt, Overcome!

This was quite common in SE Asia, where a heck of alot of '60 ammo was delinked and used in M-21s and M-40s.

We even had the same problem with the M1C/Ds, sometimes we got M2 ball, sometimes we got M72.

Yes, I agree, beg, barrow, and steal what ever works best. But as Switchblade says: Improvise, Adapt, Overcome!

Remember Carlos Hathcock had to make do with a Model 70 Winchester that was only good for about 2 MOA.

Re: m80 ball

thanks a lot guys this is some good stuff. i should be able to get some of the match grade ammo but for right now im just preparing for the worst. i think we can all agree to do otherwise would be imprudent.
and the beg, borrow and steal thing is how i got the m80 to begin with. guess ill just have to keep plugging away at it.
thanks again for all the support! ill make sure when i get a hot minute that i sit down and update the profile.

Re: m80 ball

Merry Christmas.

Numbers are for a 24-inch Remington 40X -- old guys know shit. Work it for a 22-inch M14.
