I needed to shorten the catch release to use a WSM magazine in an MDT Timbr chassis/stock.

I filed the catch down until the magazine locked in and would not come out pulling on the mag.

It now drops free on recoil.

I replaced the spring. Same problem.

Is the catch too short or too long?

Thanks for the help.

I don't know the answer but I have a couple thoughts:
- since the typical Mag catch angles up, if you shorten the tip it makes it protrude into the magwell less.
- it could be possible that the mag catch is barely engaging the tab on the magazine.

What is causing the magazine to not go in far enough to latch?

I'm leaning in the same direction as you.
Most mag latches have a built in limit on their angular travel. Shortening the latch = shortening how far into the magwell the newly formed tip will protrude.

This is one of those instances where the OP would have been better suited by adjusting the locking tab on the back of the magazines rather than modifying the mag latch.
