Magnetospeed off-barrel mount effectiveness?

Has anyone tested if off-barrel mounts stop POI and group size changes?

I've noticed in my use of V3 MS, I don't have a POI change, but there is a defined change in group size. I was wondering if both of these effects are negated with the mounts.

And because someone will say it, I just returned a labradar after a month of use alongside my MS. I had both the piet trigger and the MK Machining sight, as well as mounting the labradar on my tripod. Discrepancies of +/- 100 FPS compared to a magnetospeed, lost shots, and a shitty app.

I built a mount for myself using a clamp on picatinny mount, camera “magic arm” and bar of aluminum to mount the MS to. Works quite well, and I feel it had negated the issues with having it strapped to the barrel. Only issue is you have to be careful not to bump the arm into things for fear of knocking the MS out of alignment. I did this clearing a misfeed on an AR, and skimmed a bullet across the top of the sensor.

Definitely group size changes. Haven’t used an adapter but Wiser show up in the PX occasionally. Mixed reviews on here if I remember correctly.

Big fan of Magnetospeed (except for that designer who was dropped on his/her head as a child **%#$%$%%^&^$ strap design!).

That said I don't use it for groups. Frankly, I'm surprised (pleasantly) that even with a different off-barrel mount that the bullet and gases being so close to the bayonet, does not effect it.

I use the wiser mount and very happy with it. Just put it on my rail on my spigot. I Can run test loads, shoot groups or shoot steel out to o e mile and check speeds with no worries of changes.

Toss the strap, and just use electrical tape to secure it to your barrel. Get your S/D E/S and back in the case it goes....
Unless you just like fucking around, and lets face it "who doesn't at times!" Lol
Cheers

The GrayOps mount is the best I've used, I just leave it assembled.

Are these all groups with the mount? Or is there a group that is without? Not to be a dick, but I've had similar results when I first started loading with the Magnetospeed on, and the groups were definitely different once I took the MS off

edit: I see you also use chloroplast for a backing. Fucking best target backer ever.
All with the mount. I don’t know that I have pics of any without. I guess I could get some. They don’t change.

Word is that even with the mounts it can cause a shift to go opposite of the bayonet if it’s too close to the bullet. But you can also run it a bit further off of the bore line and still get good readings and eliminate the shift.
It certainly can.
I run my sensitivity on max and run a large gap and you’ll not see any issues, a tight gap will offset your impact slightly.

I do the exact same and get very good results with very little (No Reads) using it them on my AR's. I only wish there was a MK type mount that would fit a more traditional stock. Most stocks are angled in the fore arm so the pic mounts will not work.

I use the wiser mount. So far so good with no POI change.

OK, educate me if you'd be so kind?! Why the concern on these POI and Group details with a Chrono? I use my MS just to get enough data for Strelok, and consider it good. What am I missing? Thanks!!!

Didn't know that, I'll look into the Wiser. Ive tried mounting my MK mount to my McMillian A3 and It it throws the end of the bayonet in the bullet path.
There was some discussion somewhere about this awhile back.
On sporter style stocks you can shim the back of the bracket that holds the bayonet to the rod and bring the front back down level.
I did mine a couple of years ago and it works fine.

Okay guys, I apologize for jumping into this discussion. I myself have a V3 and am interested in getting the darn device off my barrel and possibly into one of these mounts. I recognize the benefit of not interfering with barrel harmonics, so you can grab velocity data while also shooting for groups.

So here's my questions, if you buy the V3 and then pay for one of these third party mounts, which seem to be several hundred bucks ($380 in the case of greyopscnc's option). You're well into LabRadar territory. Why not jut just throw down on a LabRadar not fuss with all the corded mess and adaptors?

Main reason I haven't gone down the LabRadar path is their not as reliable (recording shots), have to remember to arm after every shoot and their fairly delicate. The MS works pretty much every time without any after thought or worrying about knocking it over and becoming a very expensive paper weight. I shoot with a buddy that has one and he has at least one cussing fit every time because of the LabRadar. Half the time he just uses my MS.
When someone comes out with a better unit that is proven then I may jump but until then I'll stick with the trusty Magneto Speed.

Yep that seems to sum up why I have been perfectly happy to stay with the magnetospeed. Damn reliable, damn simple, in spite of that $&#&@&# strap 😎.

Shot my MS v3 for the first time today. Works fantastic and so damn simple. Wasn’t registering at first and realized sensitivity was set at 2. Bumped it to 7 worked great. Then set it to 5 and worked great. Now, as for the strap attachment. It sure does change POI when attached to the barrel. But it doesn’t bother me in the least. The chrono for me is just to gather MV and the avg. just need the numbers for the kestrel. Gun was still dead on when I removed the chrono from the barrel. But this thing is so easy and works great.

I feel the same. But I guess if u still need to sight in you could get data and proper POI at the same time with the chrono off the barrel. Guess you would be shooting less ammo over all. But it can’t be much ammo. Throw in 10 rounds in a mag, take some readings and enter the info into ballistic calculator. Done!

I've tried some .22lr subsonic (Fiocchi, Winchester, Rws) with the preset sensivity level 2 and work fine. Tested a second time and had problems of miss red, till I set to level 5.
Thanks for sharing and giving confirm.
Yea t was odd because normal setting is 2. Seems a bit low for normal. Anyway I’m leaving it at 5. I’m guessing the rod provided is a .25” thick so I set my chrono to the width of it like the diagram in the instructions show it to be .25” from the lowest portion of the opening of the barrel. I’m very impressed with the MS. I’m glad I bought it.

I'm very happy too for its user-friendless.
Less for the enlarged dimension that was supposed for larger muzzle brakes. But not for my Ruger Rpr in 338 LM that seems to be too big, to which I must find a easy solution.

tried both on and off barrel it was just more stuff I had to carry along with all the other stuff I bring to move around It did not seem to make any differance off or on so I just stuck with on barrel .
