Sidearms & Scatterguns Making improvements to a Smith & Wesson M&P?

I have an M&P 9 and an M&P22 on order and want to get some upgrades on order. So far the APEX Forward Set Sear and Trigger Kit seems to be the most common upgrade to the M&P pistols. Will the Forward sear and trigger kit work on the M&P22 also? Are the other APEX upgrades recommended in addition to?

Other available APEX options:
1- RAM magazine disconnect
2- APEX hard sear
3- Ultimate Striker Block
4- Failure resistant extractor
5- Carry or Competition spring kit

Are any of these other upgrades recommended in addition to the forward sear and trigger kit? Are there any other non APEX upgrade options to consider for the M&P pistols?

I think its really due to it being kinda a niche product, so the aftermarket will be small. Not to mention it is 100% different in function than the centerfire versions.

Re: Making improvements to a Smith & Wesson M&P?

The APEX RAM disconnect and the failure resistant extractor will work with the forward sear and trigger kit but the spring kits and hard sear will not......the geometry of the parts changes with the forward sear and trigger kit. Per a phone call to APEX this afternoon.

Re: Making improvements to a Smith & Wesson M&P?

Here is my advice: don't mess with any of that until you know the gun works right. I had an M&P Pro that should have been sent back to Smith and Wesson to make them make right, but by the time I realized it wasn't just suffering from break-in jitters I had some APEX trigger parts in it. I didn't want to send it to S&W then to have them possibly put stock parts back in it.

Yes! I spent a ton of money to get it to where it now runs 100%! Unfortunately it should have been S&W's dime...

Re: Making improvements to a Smith & Wesson M&P?

The Apex AEK kit and DCAEK kit comes with the USB now. AEK from Apex website runs about $95 and the DCAEK runs about $85, i think. If you are not using it for comps get the DCAEK, after you install everything it should be around 5 lbs. The AEK trigger pull is around 3 lbs.

Sorry, reread my comment, didn't sound fair to CNC. Yes, I have the pistol, has ran 100% for me and I'm happy. Thanks to CNC

putting the stock parts back in it and then sending it back to s&w never crossed your mind?

lol....not what i wanted to hear at all! I have the forward sear kit sitting in the safe waiting for my m&p to show up. It appears your advice of getting through a "break-in" period before making modifications is well rooted with wisdom. Thanks for the tip!

think they'll put one of their faulty recoil spring assemblies in the m&p? Then I'd have to call Glock Meister for an aftermarket RSA to fix it again. (just rubbing a little salt in the wound of Glock gen4 owners). My next gun will probably be a Glock. I have not heard decisively that Glock has fixed the recoil spring problem in their 9mm offerings, but I'm guessing they have by now.

Re: Making improvements to a Smith & Wesson M&P?

I own an M and P in 9mm and the only issue I have is the trigger which for lack of a better term is garbage. Static target shooting is fine but I found myself short stroking the trigger in a rapid shooting environment. Mostly due to the lack of positive feedback from the trigger to let my brain know it was ready to be fired again. I am used to shooting M9 in the military and a SIG 229 with the DAK trigger as my duty gun and both let me know when they are "ready". The only thing that lets me know the M&P is ready is when the trigger stops moving forward. I sent mine to Bowie Tactical Customs. Easy for me they are in Ohio. Absolutely the best and cheapest way to "fix" an M&P in my humble opinion. Good luck with it.

Typical Glock owner, does not realize that the M&P sights don't work on Glock, lol

M&P fan or not.....this is just funny!

Re: Making improvements to a Smith & Wesson M&P?

I carry an M&P45 daily that was worked over by Dan Burwell. I will tell you the APEX parts are decent and have one major advantage over working over stock parts as Dan did to mine and that is being hardened properly, because as good as he is the stock parts are going to lighten up over time. They are just soft metal.

That being said Burwell is an artist. The trigger on my pistol is finer that any other polymer pistol I have ever felt and I have felt and fired A LOT of polymer pistols. If you are willing to pay the shipping and have a true professional work your pistol over Burwell can't be beat for an M&P.

Just my .02 cents. FYI if it is a duty pistol as mine is and you use Burwell ask for about a 5 lb trigger pull...It will lighten up. Mine is at about 3 1/2 lbs now after 3 years. The reset has not changed and is PERFECT.
