My daughter put this on her facebook, impressive.

“The burden of originality is one that most people don't want to accept. They'd rather sit in front of the TV and let that tell them what they're supposed to like, what they're supposed to buy, and what they're supposed to laugh at.”
Marilyn Manson

That's my new signature.

The wife and I dig Marilyn Manson. His book is an awesome read and you will find that he actually wanted to be a writer not a musician. He's a really briliant guy albeit a little weird.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

...he forgot "and what they are supposed to look like!"

Individuality and self-expression are not things to be discouraged!

It's called "freedom" and people die for it!

Good stuff from Mr Manson!

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

Orginality is truly hard to come by and as humans as it is almost against our nature. Even when someone is orginal that too will be copied by others soon enough and it won't be orginal anymore. Even Marilyn Manison who thinks of himself as orginal comes from a long line of actors and musicans that claim to be orginal but others before them blazed the path. Before Marilyn Manson there was a guy named Alice Cooper who was just as orginal and as billiant.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

I see his "message" as more of a if you are not like me, then you are not right. Kinda the same thing he is preaching against. That is just my opinion though.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

I like the quote and agree whole heartedly. He however is coming from a different world than the other 98% of the population. IF I wanted to express my originality by say, wearing make up, or carrying a snake around my shoulders, I would find myself jobless. Having to make a living off of my creative skills would land me on the street.
I respect the guy, and like I said, agree with the quote; but being preached at from the other side of the fence pisses me off to no end.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

I'm not a Manson "fan", but I do enjoy some of his music. Over the years I've only seen a small hand full of interviews of him and it's usually surprising to hear the conservative and well thought answers he gives for someone who looks like him. He's definitely one strange bird though.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

Manson is awesome and that is a great quote. If she hasn't read it already you might pick her up a copy of his book for Christmas. Really great stuff.

Musician's are a rarebreed such as, Lady GaGa, Alice Cooper, etc, etc.
But when they interview them we see they are very worldly and well spoken.
I think it's a stage act to draw fans.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

Always liked his music, but he is a friek. I recall a friend from childhood saying: "I love this music! but I think I'll steal the CD cause I dont want to give a dime to that piece of shit!"
Interesting comming from a teen.

I agree with the quote though, makes perfect sense.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

Didnt he used to have alot of "hate the cops" kinda lyrics?

Arrested his drummer once, years ago in Dallas. Think his name was Ginger Fish or somethin. Total turd.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

I see the quote as something from a swammi or a Zen Buddhist. Just think for yourself, don't act like everyone else.

That's all he's saying. He's not saying be a freak or anything else he's just saying don't drink the Kool-aid.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

Much of Manson's thought is apparently informed by the ideas propounded by Anton LaVey - he of the Church of Satan fame(or infamy if you prefer), etc. LaVey's "Satanic Bible" is largely plagarized from a book titled "Might Is Right" written around the turn of the twentieth century, which is itself basically a lengthy rant of purely Nietzschean origins. One of the key precepts at the core of Nietzsche's work was separating oneself from, or better still, rising above the "herd," and not meekly following the dogmas and mass-conformities(of thought)that people commonly do. Point being, that's how I intepret what Manson is saying.

Not a new idea to be sure, but one worth keeping in mind I think.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

One of my favorite quotes is an old Iriquois motto. I think it's appropriate for this topic.
"Think for yourself, act for others."

I think that was a grammer slam dude, your previous post was a tad hard to understand. No offense...

Ya. Definately directed towards the 6th grade grammer.

Manson is quite an enigma. He's hard to take seriously from his appearance, but he's impressively intelligent in every interview of him I've seen. The way I see it, he's change. Just like Elvis, The Beatles, Kiss, Metallica, Prince... They all did what they wanted, not what the mainstream was pushing. That rubs some people the wrong way, but it always changes the landscape they influenced.

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

Being 'original' at the expense of everyone's sensibilities for the sole purpose of drawing self-attention makes you a jack-ass not an artist. Bob Dylan did not use prosthetic breasts to draw crowds, Steven King did not rely on satanic imagery to sell books, Clint Eastwood did not embrace a homosexual persona and lifestyle to achieve his success and fame.
It puts the state of our society into perspective, when the pop-culture media embraces and celebrates a figure like Brian Warner, whose main contribution to the world consists of marketing sacreligious diatribes to impressionable children.
To each his own I suppose, but you won't find me endorsing that man's rhetoric!

Re: Marilyn Manson quote from my daughter

What each person considers "weird" or "out there" varies. These artists may be different and unique, but that doesn't mean they're doing it wrong. That's what makes the world go 'round. Take Lady Gaga, for example. Some people think she's an over-sexed anti-christ, others see her as a role-model and artist.

Who are we to judge?

If you look past lady Gaga's exterior appearance and look at her history and artistic ability you'll see she ranks up there as one of the best pianists of all time. She is superb on the keyboard/piano and has been since she was 4.

Saw some history on her, and whether we like it or not she has changed history

Imagine Israeli soldiers dancing to her music in a combat zone LOL

Oh man, I saw her last July 4th. Of course, she's a little out there, but damn it, she puts on a good show. And hell yeah she's talented! A lot of people are quick to talk shit on her pop songs, but if you just listen to her and her piano, she's amazing. Not to mention, she's really got a connection with her fans. It's crazy good. There was nothing but love in that arena that night.
