I had some questions floating around in my head and wanted to see if I could pick up any ideas here. I've been playing around with some rimfire mods because its cheaper if I screw up. Right now I'm looking for some ideas on how to attach a handguard. I've been turning my model 60 into an appleseed rifle. Currently looks like this:

and the handguard is attached via a screw into a drilled and tapped dovetail filler:

I'm refinishing the stock and redoing the handguard in birch so it matches. I have the barrel free-floated and if I can I'd like to keep it that way. Any ideas? something like a barrel band under the wood comes to mind.

Rifle is a model 60 with model 70 fire control/feed parts, GI web sling, and tech sights. Stock has aluminum pillars and has been bedded (jb weld because I was curious).

I probably should have put this in the gunsmithing section but, I'd still like to hear your thoughts.
