Where/what are the entry fee used for? Obviously range time, R.O.s, food. What else?

rent the land for a weekend if its not an actual range hosting the event, targets and target hardware, props, range prep/maintenance, radios, ipads for scoring, canopies, water food, RO hotel rooms, ROs are usually volunteers, but some matches have paid them a little bit here and there...there are a bunch of different things depending on the range and its setup
ignore peper's dumb af answer as it doesnt even apply to prs matches, shooters trying to help out and set up targets/stages at events have already caused problems in the past...its literally in the shooter rules...

I will add that any match, no matter how small takes quite a bit of time and coordination to setup and run. I run local matches for zero pay, because it is needed in our area. The fees charged are as large as we feel the market will bear here, but cover only expenses (most of them, but not some minor expenses). I will spend 10-25 hours setting up a one day match, depending on the complexity of the COF, new or refurbished targets used and what changes I make to the COFs.
Point being that the people who run these events have countless hours into them, and unlike stupid people like myself, they probably value their time and it has to be worth their while or they would not run them. All of the commentators that have said that match directors charge too much have literally no idea and I suggest that they run a match of their own and give back the money to the participants.

Why are you so against prs, black guns, or anything that has the word tactical in it. Jesus Christ man. It must suck to be so easily triggered.
I doubt many MDs are walking away from a match with lots in their pocket. By the time everything is all done I would think that the dollars left over don't even work out to minimum wage.
Yes there are lots of one time costs (targets, props, hit indicators, etc.) but every match you need to be replacing things, fixing stuff, etc. and things add up.

Not to mention the areas in the Midwest and pnw that grow brush and grass like crazy. The amount of bush hogging, cutting in shooting lanes and cutting out branches is no small feet and it takes fuel and equipment to do that.
There are some really big, one day, MOST matches where the toll is $50. Just saying. I pay the $250 five or six times a season, but I try to be in more one day $50 Cunning Steel Matches (hat tip @Culpeper) than the big PRS matches. Not that the competition is any less in the one day matches, because it isn't. MOST and Border Wars has world class shooters who attend and also shoot the PRS circuit. Overall I've been extremely impressed and humbled.

Fig, you are not wrong, and I get it, since I am involved in one day matches that I would like to think are as fun and interesting and difficult 2-day PRS matches and also right around that $50 price. But what I said above applies. Nobody is making a thing on these matches and they are largely fueled by people willing to volunteer their time and sometimes a bit of personal cash to run. At least in my experience from here in Florida.
Maybe if the person running the match owns the property that the match is being run on it is different, but then they have their own costs for that land that need to be considered.
There's really no free lunch. Consider the extra time and effort and logistics involved in running a large two day PRS match added to that.
Edit: for perspective, know that I can only afford to attend one major two day match per year from both a cost and time angle. So I am not coming from some entitled attitude or view. I still think that the major matches are fun and worth it.

Alright I'll be the guy to say I don't see it. Look before someone crucifies me let me say I have NEVER ran a match so obviously I don't see it. So lets talk numbers: I try and make about 5 2 day matches per year. The smallest match I go to ends up with about 125 people. $280 x 125ppl= $35,000.00. Where does it go? These are all established shooting ranges, so I doubt they are going out and buying all new steel for every match. I have been wondering what happened to the cash prizes awarded in PRS. I would love it for someone to show me. I all for the range making a good pay day on these matches, because if the ranges aren't making it then we have no where to shoot and that is bad for all of us.
$50 dollars is super cheap IMO. In Canada (different market for sure) the matches I run cost anywhere from $90-110 for a one day event, these matches are about 100 round events. Last year we ran two and I think between the 3 of us that ran them it probably cost us about $500. It isnt much but I am not in the business of paying for other people to shoot. If you run matches on a facility that you own/operate you can do them for less.
This year due to lower costs (we already have all the steel which is $$$) we have a little bit in the bank and after some niceties (we bought target flashers this year) we will probably put any extra back on the prize table.

About 28% goes to the government less expenses. It also depends if we are talking about Milo, Milo the Mayor, or Milo the Militant. All three will claim we all have a share and what is good for the company is good for all. Capitalism makes America great and and disclosure of profits are reserved for investigating congressional committees and only if the deal comes with absolution. Milo is the god of corn, rain, and rice in various pagan African countries. It is all good because we all have a share. It is asking what does Vortex do with my money that is no longer my money. You go to a match and you pay set price for a service and then after the fact want an audit. Was there a problem with the customer service or the customers?

I run the match at my club, it's once a month.
I design the cof, get there early to set up and paint targets, RO it, then pack it all up after everyone's fucked off.
1st prize is bragging rights.
Although we are on a smaller scale, we charge $8 for club members and $16 for non members. This goes towards keeping the range open.

Nice thing with capitalism is getting to vote with your dollar. I can't see myself dropping the big money on the big matches so I don't go. I'd rather drop $240 on ammo and practicing and then hit a club match for $10, but that's me. I also don't expect any prizes, a staff of professional RSO's and some game changing course of fire. But as far as where the money goes... Once you have the steel and if you're shooting on club property...not really sure. But hey, I'm not the accountant for the people putting on the matches.
