What does it take to host a PRS match?

I’m sure many of you have volunteered for these events. Where do you get your volunteer pool from? How do you keep said volunteers happy?

What’s sets a good competition apart from a bad competition for the participants?

How does a competition venue deal with safety and liability? Especially for ones on active military facilities.

Just looking for insight. I’ve dealt with administrative and logistical nightmares before. I like to hear the peanut gallery to preempt my role as a good idea fairy. There’s definitely a demand for such matches, and ever since the VT mag ban, we’ve soiled our chances of hosting three gun.

Having volunteers is one of the hardest parts of hosting any match. Without a “club” or a strong following it’s hard to get people to volunteer as an RO.

good vs bad competition is the course of fire, target size, target placement, time constraints, and gear constraints. If you have a match and the number one person only has a 40% hit ratio, it clearly says there may be something wrong. Now, it’s unreasonable to say the number one person should have a 100% hit ratio either. It takes the match director to understand the target population and level of shooters. There’s stages that almost everyone will shoot well (confidence booster) and others that your middle and bottom 1/3 will struggle, but it’s not for them, it’s for your top 1/3 competitors.

safety and liability. I’ve shot both on and off military installations. The military installations coming with hard requirements. You may need to take a class and become certified in even stepping out on the range. Then you may need to figure out how to schedule it and lastly, medical professional on site. It may require the EMS present or a EMT decided to the event. Painful, but it’s an opportunity. Both normally both events have liability forms that competitors sign.

If you’re looking to host a match, I would reach out to people who do this often and find out how they crack the nut. They may not at first be open to the trade secrets, but it’s worth it.

If you’re into PRS/NRL shooting in the north east check out these guys.
