Small ring or Large ring?
Small ring Mausers are rated too low for most cartridges today.
What caliber is it for right now? What bottom metal/mag system.
I dont know as much about Mausers as some people. but we're buidling them from the ground up in school and they can be limiting depending on which Mauser98 you have.
...Just sayin

Completely off topic, but if its a Swedish small ring, its metalurgy is far supperior to any other Mauser, escpecially German war time production, small or large ring. German 8mm and some of the other 7x57 have a operating CUP pressure of 37,000 (8x57) and 52,000 (7x57), where as the operating pressure for the 6.5x55 Swede (small ring Mauser) is around 55,000 cup. What you hear is false. Swedish small rings are the creme of the crop of Mausers. You can disagree, but you would be wrong
.
On the topic, do a 6.5-06. Thats a sweet little round, and real similiar to the cases that the actions were designed for. Just check your operating pressures for what ever you build, and make sure that they do not exceed the pressures of the original cartridge the action was intended for.
Do not plan on building a custom and expecting to run wildcat cartridges at max loads, unless you dont mind nicknames like lefty, lucky, or cyclops.
