Dark Side of the Moon
Here's s acouple of pics of my Mauser 98k with Short Side Rail mount which is a Miltech refurb.

All matching numbers made at the original Mauser Oberndorf factory sometime in 1941.

Action/Barrel and all hardware are from a single original vet bring back that had been "sporterized".

Had to source a couple of the bits (genuine sight hood and numbered cleaning rod) from Norway.

Stock is a walnut replacement.

Scope caps and sling are high quality repro's I had made.

A really fun rifle and a piece of "conserved" history....should be good for another 70 years.

Re: Mauser byf 41 from Miltech

Thanks!

Got it shooting great now - took a while to find a load that works with the rear sight ramp.

Ed's team at Miltech did a lot of work on the trigger to try to make it more consistent and less "Mauserish".

With scope it can get down to around 2" groups at 100m - could probably do better with someone else pulling the trigger!

Thats very nice . I have an oberndorf too, but its not nearly as good as that one...its shoots well enough though, its a russian capture.
Try jack Truscott at the royal armouries in Leeds for bits, he can get anything, and reasonable too. He got me a genuine hood and sling for under £50.

He got a friend of mine an oberndorf mauser, that was made during the war for a private customer, and thus never saw service. Its absolutely mint. We only found out what it was due to my friend buying an absolute gold mine of a book, called "backbone of the Whermacht" Its a trainspotters guide to the mauser, see if you can get a copy, its the definitive work i reckon.

Thanks Baldie.

"Backbone of the Wehrmacht" and it's companion "Sniper Variations" are the best books I have found on the 98k.

Sounds like Jack is a good guy to know. I'm planning a second 98k - have a Zeiss Zielsechs to use on it. Not sure whetehr I should go for another SSR or do a turret build.

Sorry to say I became a bit of an 98k anorak after this project!

Re: Mauser byf 41 from Miltech

I nearly bought a 'real' k98 high turret sniper last year, being sold through a dealer in Kent on behalf of buyer. When i got the fotos i found it to be a total shambles, numbers were not right and in wrong places, scope was wrong for year, stock had been sanded heavily, the gun was a total mock up and not even a good 1. Heard it sold for £2300 to fella here in NI, seen the gun on the range 2 months ago and was glad i walked away.

Re: Mauser byf 41 from Miltech

Seen similar here on the mainland on many types of desirable rifles (espacially Enfield No4T and Mauser 98k scoped rifles). "Bitsa" rifles put together out of mismatched and bastardized/repro parts, shot out trash etc. All priced around £2,500-£3,000.

Go to any of the big events with trade stands at places like Bisley and you'll see acres of old tat being shunted round......I suppose somebody buys it otherwise it wouldn't keep coming up at these prices?

Worth taking some time, doing the homework and going to the good guys if you are serious - even though it may cost a bit more!

Re: Mauser byf 41 from Miltech

Same here in the USA. Most of the desirable weapons are humped up and the run of the mill weapons are outragously priced and usualy in poor condition. Very difficult to find anything of quality at any price mowadays.
