Re: MAY 2012 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Went out Saturday, determined to shoot at least one match.

Wind was pretty stiff that afternoon, knocking me around, but I stuck it out long enough to shoot a few targets, and did the 25yd 4psn shoot. It wasn't as good as it's been in the past, but I felt like I'd done okay considering the wind.

Had to have big bars of steel on the bottoms of the target frames to keep'em from blowing over, if that's any indication. And had to weight down my shooting mat, to boot.

Anyhow. I picked my day, and them's the breaks. Shooting's fun, even if it's more fun to shoot in better conditions.

Re: MAY 2012 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Thanks sixgunner455. I see you also use the Eley Sport. I kind of like the stuff as do some of my rifles.

A 224 is nothing to sneeze at in this four position game. I've shot plenty of those, and less as well over the years since we've been doing these comps.

Re: MAY 2012 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Yeah, I've been getting more consistent results out of the Eley Sport than lots of other stuff I've tried in it. One thing it likes is an Eley variety that runs $10/box - the Sport is much more affordable, if not quite as consistent.

I can't say I'm embarrassed by the 224, just - I've been doing 10 points or so better than that at 25yds until I hit all that wind Saturday.

Re: MAY 2012 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

That wind is the worst for trying to post a good score from offhand and kneeling, that's for sure. I had a pretty calm morning overall today with good conditions - mostly no wind.

Fun day at the range this afternoon.

NAME: SIXGUNNER455
MATCH: WBM25Y B (f. & r. bag)
CLASS / SIGHTS: S 3-9x40 BUSHNELL
CALIBER: .22LR
RIFLE: SAVAGE MKII FV
AMMO: ELEY SPORT

GRASSHOPPER - 5PTS
BEES - 10PTS
FLIES - 75PTS
HEADSHOT BONUS: 2PTS (1 BEE, AND THE GRASSHOPPER)

FINAL SCORE: 92 / 200

I am still not getting any traction doing the tactical match. Every time I follow all of the rules - it's the first time you shoot it that month, stage one is the first shot of the day that you make, cold bore - my score ranges from -80 (yes, it was really that painful on the errors) up to about +15.

That is one tough target and set of match rules. Fun, but very challenging.

I shot one of them today, but I deliberately just did it for practice. I didn't even have the right numbers for the grid - just shot 1-10 sequentially. I shot some dot drills, some groups at 25y and 50y, waited until I was in a good groove, fine-tuned my zero a little bit, and finally got a reasonable score (85 overall), with not too many errors.

If only I could do it cold!

Re: MAY 2012 SH SHORT RANGE RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

try this for cold bore or cold shooter syndrome:

record how far off (if it's far off) your first shot of the day is whether it's doing these comps or any other thing. then when your ready to shoot the TRC, make the adjustment.

my MKII F on average usually shoots .75" high an .75" left the first shot of the day @ 50 yards, so i usually hold 4:00 or 5:00 on the outer ring to compensate and on a calm day and i'm cutting the black. my MKII BV is .25"ish high and .25" left @ 50 yards, so i do the 4:00 or 5:00 on the edge of the inner ring.

of course if there's a wind and depending on speed and direction, it gets a little more interesting.

i missed a whole lotta shootin last month, i hope i can get out this month, which may throw my stage 1 shot off even more (shooter error - rusty)

Had a massive flyer on stage 2 which dropped my shot from box 4 down into box 2.stage 3 has 1 shot on the right edge which JUST breaks the line.(it looks a little larger than the other holes as i placed a bullet into it to deciede wheter i was going to give myself the points or not)missed the 20pts cicle on the know your limits which resulted in a no score.on the second hostage i pulled the shot mad left, i slapped the trigger and could have slapped myself! last hostage i pulled right. overall it should have gone better and i need to start getting up into the 180- 190 zone

Well here we are halfway through 2012 going into June, and had many shooters so far this year, just never in the same month. How quickly time goes by.
