Hi guys,

I want to buy a A5 off of a hide member, he sent me pics of the stock and he said that he got some oil in the action inlett of the stock from when he cleaned and lubed his barreled action. Im worried that when I bed the action to the stock, the bedding compound wont stick properly. Any thoughts?

Also, the stock has a Rem Varmint barrel channel, and my barreled action is going to have a Rock MTU/AMU contour, how hard is it to open up the barrel channel on MCM stocks? I have done it on a B&C stock and a few wood stocks, but never a MCM, will I need to coat the barrel channel with something after I open it up?

here is a pic of the oil in the inlett

thanks

Re: MCM A5 bedding question, not what you think!

Any oil will act as a contaminant when attempting to apply more bedding compound over the existing.

Isopropyl alcohol will help to move the oil around, but if you want to get it off, acetone in a squirt bottle will get that oil off and leave you with a clean surface to rebed your barreled action. Acetone will also have the side effect of reanimating anything that originally came from a rattle can, so take care where you spray it if youre stock is painted back yard style.

Heated coatings (duracoat/ceracote/line-x/rhino) should not be affected by alcohol/acetone, but try in an inconspicuous place first to be sure.

I wouldnt worry a bit. You will need to grind out some in all those areas anyway. Clean up with rubbing alcohol after youre done grinding.

Opening up the channel is no different than the others you have done. It just takes a little more elbow grease. That fiberglass is harder to sand than the material in the B&C! THe channel doesnt have to be sealed. If you want to go ahead. Some thinned down clear epoxy is the best. Though a few coats of Krylon or rattle can clear coat will pretty much seal it up.

I would just wash the stock and inlett with hot soapy water, then rub out with alcohol. Dremel the surface rough and rub again with alcohol. Maybe acetone if you bave good paint on the stock. To seal the channel after milling or sanding just paint with thin epoxy resin. If your resin is too thick, thin down with methanol or acetone.

I agree with edi. Hot soapy water ("honey why are you showering with THAT?!?!") and some removal in the affected areas SHOULD take care of it. I don't know how deeply the oil could get....

If it were a screaming deal I'd probably risk it, if it weren't a great price I probably wouldn't.

Re: MCM A5 bedding question, not what you think!

The deal aint bad, $725 shipped, but what makes it a "screaming deal" for me is that its the exact color I want, and I dont have to wait 5 months to get it.

Plus, Im not afraid of some work, like other said, I need to grind down some of those areas anyway.

It is a nice color......

As long as you're going in eyes open and happy with what you're paying for what you are getting it is a good deal!

Another method you might consider (maybe not necessary) is something I did on my first bedding job. I hogged out some of the stock filler with the dremel to create positive "locks" that the bedding material would fill in and physically lock the bedding material to the stock.

I also opened up the barrel channel a bit to allow the barrel to get a litte better air circulation for cooling. I wrapped sandpaper around a deep well socket and went to work, checking progress often via the barreled receiver. Easily done.

Here's a couple pics of how I removed stock filler in the receiver and barrel-pad area to create the locks:

Re: MCM A5 bedding question, not what you think!

Thanks MM. I too use the sandpaper/socket method for barrel channels. Its going to take a lot of sanding to get that channel from a Rem Var to a Rock MTU, lol.

By the way, hate to be the one to tell you, but the bolt handle inlett on your stock is on the wrong side

Re: MCM A5 bedding question, not what you think!

Dont worry about the oil,use a 1 1/4" or so pipe or wood dowel and wrap some sandpaper around it ,80 grit is fine.sand away, get some clearance in the there for the bedding compound. If you have an automotive paint store nearby ask for the adhisive backed sandpaper that is like 2"x 8" it works good to wrap around the pipe. You can use 36 grit carefully to open the barrel channel and them go to 80 or 100 grit to finish.just tape the whole stock with masking tape so you dont scratch it up too much.
Dont forget to open up your recoil lug a bit with a dremel and use a ball end bit to reach inside the bottom of the recoil recess.Contact Winroscoe also for alot more bedding tips he is always full of great tips and willing to help out.
