There seems to be a dizzying amount of McMillan stocks available, and I'm sure each are best for different roles/needs. I've been trying to beg google to help me, but I still can't find a comprehensive source that will list the pros/cons of them all. I'm not in the immediate market for one, still saving up money for a Tac Ops or even a Badger M2008/AICS build if I like the stock. Seems like the A5 is the latest and greatest, and the cons seem to be centered around its weight... And apparently it's the updated version of the A4... But I'm willing to bet the A4 is still favored by some as it's still in production lol.

I really like the look of the A5 with the adjustable cheek piece and a ten round magazine. I'm currently in the same boat as you are. I'm saving up my pennies to have Mike at Tacops build me a .308 with either a Manners T4 stock or a McMillian A5 like stated above. I think it'd be hard to go wrong with either of them.

Do yourself a favor if you need an adjustable cheek piece and get the Terry Cross hardware. The thumbwheel IMHO sucks bad. After dicking with mine for years I've lowered it all the way down, loctited the screws and put a TacOps cheek pad on it. The thumbwheel screws kept backing out while shooting making the cheek piece wiggle and last I checked there was no fix from McMillan.

Don't worry too much about it yet. Suggest you keep saving and reading/looking. Just like with cars, trucks, and women, we all have our preferences with rifles/stocks/optics/etc.
Maybe if you grip a few different makes/models to see what you like best? How it looks is important to some, how well it works for you is what really matters.

I've had 2 McM stocks and yes, there are a lot of different options, colors & models. I just ordered an A5 from JWP in urban-camo for my next / up and coming build.
Do as much looking as you can, handle as many stocks as you can get your hands on and then try and make a decision. I believe JW is working with Manners now so that may open up your options even more.

If you would like to get your mitts on some diff versions look up Gene Sears supply or third Generation shooter supply. They are one in the same but I think one is a retail store the other is online. Anyway they are in OKC just down the road from you there. Also a SH vendor now. They have the HTG, A2, A3, A3-5, A4, A5 in stock in many cases.

Alex at Masterclass stocks is building me a prone stock to replace my A5. If I needed a 'tactical', Manners would be my choice over McMillan.

Go to the Manners website and look at what they have also. I had been looking at McMillan for a while and then ended up getting a manners T5. Both very high quality stocks.

Not to add even more uncertainty to your choosing, but check out the McMillan A3 as well. After holding an A3 and A5, I fell in love with the A3. I happily sold my AICS 2.0 to pay for the A3. It is by far the most comfortable stock I've played around with. As another poster here said, I won't have a bolt gun in any stock but an A3 from here on out.

I have an McMillan A4 on my 300WM. It is the best stock I have used. Three are a few things I have problems with. The saddle cheek piece the screws do come loose after only a few shots. I put lock tight blue in to keep them in place. Not enough to stop me from moving them but enough to gum up the threads enough to make them not work lose any more. The other problem I have is the color. As with most firearms accessories companies they are not web developers. Here in ND there are not many who use their stocks in all the colors they have. The ones I know who have them are black or OD green. Their webpage does not really give a good color representation of what the colors look like. Granted my stock still turned out ok. It kind of looks like wood. Not my first choice but still kind of cool.
I like how I can get the same grip every easily after working the bolt. It is very smooth no need to get your thumb around a pistol grip or anything like that. If you happen to snag the safety my thumb is right there and I can feel it not on fire. The hand hook that some do not like I am a fan of it. I carry a little denim squeeze bag stuffed full of saw dust that allows me two different places I can put it. Some positions I need just a little more elevation in the back and I can put it below the hand hook. If I need less I can put it on front. Some locations just using my hand is fine.
Some of the guys I shoot with would not shoot anything but the A5. They hate my A4. They feel it is too bulky. I shoot off of bags every now and again and I like how the A4 is a straight line. The tracking in the bags is pretty smooth. I do not like the angle of the A5. Both systems are good it is just what you like. With the A5 it is easy to just slide forward to get the elevation you need.
