Measuring Case Length Accurately

Is there a tool to help measure the empty case length? With a caliper I keep getting different readings as its hard to line up the case exactly perpendicular to the caliper claws. I found some that measure from the shoulder and some that measure with the bullet in but nothing for just empty cases.

So there are no tools to help with this? It's a little aggravating taking 4 or 5 measurements for one case as they keep changing, if there was some sort of holder for the case it would be much easier.

the rcbs case master gauging tool will do case length, concentricty, neck thickness and impending case head separation......a freind of mine has one that is missing some of the parts. the concentricty and head separation part seems to work pretty good....you may be having problems useing calipers due to the cases not being trimed square

Re: Measuring Case Length Accurately

if you trim the cases to be relatively concentric your going to get a lot better reading. or have someone that has a giraud trim them for you and you will have them all the same length

With some of my loads being a bit warm, its is best for me to remove the primer before measurement because of the primer backing out a little after several firings.

Re: Measuring Case Length Accurately

Case necks are seldom square with the body. That causes some measuring errors. Some calipers are POS. A combination of the two causes people to sin from their mouth.
