Ok guys this is about as non-precision shooting/scientific as you can get. But, I have some buddies that are less than analytical, and they have made a statement that a 257 Weatherby Mag will shoot through a 1" thick piece of steel free hanging at 100yds. And that no other "normal" cartridge/bullet combo will do that. I find that hard to believe. Anyone have any experience in this area

The .50 is rated to penetrate .87" of face-hardened armor plate at 100 yards. .75" at 500 yards. 1" inch of mild steel would be childs-play.

Plenty of rounds can blow through 1" rolled steel at 100 yards. A500 is a different matter.

At 1000 yards, my 690 FMJ puts a major dent in a 3/8" AR500 plate. So, anything closer is going to be ugly

Steel of unknown hardness though appearing to our barely-calibrated college-age experience as a bit harder than "mild", .240 Weatherby Mag at 100 yards, 1/2-inch thicknesses were most easily penetrated.
But ordinary .30-06 M2 Ball also blew through, though far less decisively. Speed definitely helps with stuff softer than armor plate.
Not understanding how heats above 400 F or so can turn hard steel into soft steel, nor comprehending how huge of a difference there is between the hard stuff and soft stuff, is how the false beliefs of planted explosive charges bringing down the Twin Towers nine years ago continue to persist.
Hardness makes all the difference.

Steel is a generic term people use to describe metal of unknown specs. Depends a lot on grade, age, and heat treat properties. Most rifles calibers can penetrate 1" (1018 grade) mild steel or similar grades. My 16" .223 with cheap CNN will go thru .75" mild steel easily. Without question most other calibers will do the same. If it were armor plate, tool steel, or other hardenable grade, would be a different story. Without knowing the material it is just impossible to know the outcome on a specific target.

While I have never shot a 257 Weatherby at 1” plate I have shot 1” mild steel with a 25-06 (almost identical) and a 264 Win mag .006” difference in diameter and a lot of .264 loads are faster with same bullet weight than the 257 Wea. I would bet money or cold beer (and I would win) that your not going to make it through. I have also shot 1” steel with a lot of other rounds and the only one that makes it through on first impact is my 50 BMG.

IIRC even 50 bmg will not penetrate 1" of mild steel at 100 yds. I'm talking ball ammo not AP. I do know that 50 bmg AP will penetrate at least 1.5" of mild steel at 100 yds.

Definately bullshit, I have shot a 25-06 at steel as well, and it wouldnt even come close to going through an inch. I have an inch thick target that I shot at about 100yds with my 300wsm and AP bullets, the made it about 80% through the steel.
Unless they are talkin about some extremely soft piece of steel, in which case a whole host of bullets and calibers would ding right through it.
