hi - does anyone know of a good way to temporarily attach a one piece base to a 22lr receiver that has not been drilled and tapped? i have the correct base so the legnth and radii
will match up but i would rather not d&t the receiver because it would no longer be origional. the piece is in as new shape so i would want to do something that didn't affect the blueing(value). thanks - van

Nylon zip ties? Black of course...white/yellow would clash.

Seriously, if the rifle is precious to you for some reason or is something that you want to preserve "as is" then I would strongly recommend that you find another rifle to mount a scope on and leave the other one well enough alone. .22LR bolt actions (and semis) are generally pretty inexpensive in comparison to centerfire rifles and most modern rifles are easily setup to run optics.

The only other solution that I can think of, depending on the particulr rifle, is that there are "no drill/tap" mounts available for SOME firearms that mount using existing iron sight mounts, etc. Now, they generally aren't worth a @#$%, but if you simply MUST have a scope on the rifle, its likely better than having to drill/tap the receiver if you don't want to go that route.

It would help to know which rifle. DIP sells some bases that attach to the 3/8" dovetail present on most .22 rifles via set screws. These may mar the finish on the top of the receiver, though. Alternatively, you can get dovetail to picatinny adapters, but they usually aren't a great option.

Radiator hose clamp. You can get some stainless clamps from Summit and bead blast them which would look really sweet.

Seriously drill and tap the damn thing. It's a freakin' rifle and a .22 at that.

If you're that worried about hurting it's value or modifying it from original then you'll probably do as much harm taking it out and shooting it. You'll always be worried about getting a scratch on it. Better to delegate it to a safe glass enclosed box on the mantel as a conversation piece instead of making it a fun usable gun to enjoy. I've had some pretty hard to find 22's over the years and all are tools to enjoy and use but with careful installation of a scope I can't see where it'd hurt the value other than modifying it would kill any sentimental value it may have had being Gramps target gun he won every match he ever went to.

Decision you'll have to make based on what you feel is best for you and the gun.
