One will never know but I think there is a good chance this was no "accident"
Two key parts from the article are:
"a Mexican naval captain traveling with them"
"The vehicle was riddled with bullets, most concentrated around the passenger-side window"
Sounds too much like somebody was trying to off someone before they could spill the beans on something.

I'm with W54. 4 trucks with 4 shooters each "chasing bad guys" in an area that they had no jurisdiction in just HAPPENED to brandish their weapons at a clearly marked US embassy vehicle, open fire on it, and chase it until they were forced away by Mexican soldiers? Does not compute.
