Has anyone used RE-15 and Sierra 168 Matchking in the M1A? If you have what kind a results did you get? I've used IMR4895, IMR4064, and AA2520 with good results for many years but I have quite a bit RE-15 on hand and would like to use it in my M1A but not sure how well it works. Does it work well with the M1A with regards to the gas system?

People hate me for saying it, but I just dont think that M1A's are that accurate. I've shot all sorts of stuff through mine, and it's an M1A super-match with a bedded stock and a good trigger. If it wasn't pretty and there wasn't a great story behind how I acquired it, I would get rid of it.

Mine also is a heavy match barrel and I get about 3/4" groups with it at 600 yds. I've got two and I'm on barrels 7 and 8. I would agree it probably isn't as accurate at some others but I do enjoy shooting it although I now compete with the AR.

Here's the perfect solution to solving any accuracy issues with an M1A:
sell the M1A and get yourself an AR-10.
Sure, the M1A looks cool but the accuracy is rather hit & miss from everything I've seen or read. Get yourself a decent AR-10 and you'll have a good lookin' rifle with good accuracy to boot.

hmmm lotta B.S. up above.... Especially when we're talking about a BATTLE RIFLE. On to the OP's actual question. RE-15 is a decent powder choice for the M1A. The op-rod pressure is acceptable, as long as you're not loading too hot a round. That is true of all M1A "compatible powders". 43 grains is probably close to max of what you want to throw through the M1A with a 178 gr, maybe get away with a hair more using the 168, due to pressure. The military found the same thing, through weapon damage. I haven't tried the SMK's as of yet, as the AMAX bullets provide great performance at a locally great price. 155's are nice, but without the ability to push them to hard through the platform, I've opted for the 178 AMAX in front of 43 gr. RE-15, with a Schuster Adj Gas plug, of course. Awesome performance. To date, my best group was 1.542" at 200 yards. Oddly enough, the round shoots only slightly smaller at 100 yards. Thinking this is operator error on my part. Never was good at shooting groups. The rifle is VERY picky, however, on what it likes. 43.5 grains and it wont print under 6" at 200 yards and sounds just plain weird... If you end up trying RE15, it may take a few loads to figure out what the picky eater will swallow, not sure if this is true of all M1A's, but this one in particular likes next to nothing.

And that distance is pushing the limits on a .308 period. Don't care what rifle, what action, what barrel. It's a long haul for the round.

You are correct I made a typo error, it should have been 1 3/4 MOA. The 10 ring on the 600 yd National Match target is 2 minutes and I have seen some good shooters shoot 199's and 200's consistantly over the years with a sling so the rifle can better than 2 MOA but probably not much better. Sorry for the error

mine is pretty decent for a m14, i'd say it's an MOA rifle at under 500, i've not had a chance to get out past that on anything measurable for groups. I knew that going in- I don't expect that it will EVER shoot bugholes, it's not designed for that. IMHO, the platform is fine as a battle rifle, and OK as a DMR, but it's not going to be a benchrest champion. Yes, there are some guys and some rifles that can do magical things with them, but if you expect an m1a (even a nice one) to shoot on par with precision bolt guns, then you are going to be disappointed.

I have shot 5 shot groups at 600 that were 1 3/4" with iron sights using the 600 yd target. I have cleaned the NRA target at 600 yds with the M1A which is 20 shots with Iron sights prone with sling. I have made the President's 100 with the M1A. The 100 ring is 2 MOA on that target but I could never clean it consistently like the very good shooters do.

They are fun guns and I enjoy shooting them and I've put one in Sage stock and going to see how it does with a scope at 600 yds. Never shot an M1A with a scope at 600 before. Should be interesting. Thanks again for the input.

There are far too many versions of the M1A to group them in the same category when discussing accuracy. Designed as a battle rifle and improving in several areas of the Garand, the basic M14 was never made to be a precision rifle.
Fortunately, it responds well to some accuracy tricks but it will never be anyone's first choice if ultimate precision is the goal. Sadly, it has not been able to keep up with a similarly built AR-10 in competition and costs slightly more to custom build to match quality.
Saying that, my LRB M25 with a heavy Krieger barrel and glass bedded stock averaged 1.05 MOA for 5, 5 shot groups with 168 gr TAP ammo and not cleaning it for about 1000 rds. That is accurate enough for me.

M1A's are just hard to shoot accurately. Its NOT the rifle's fault. Spend a little more time actually shooting one instead of posting about it and you may find that out.

I shoot 42.8 of Reloader 15 behind any old junker 168 HP I can find in a LC case and do fine with mine. I can't shoot clean at the 200 line with mine, so I must have a real shitheap.
But I still go shoot anyway.
The new hornady book shows 42 as a max in their service rifle section, but the 42.8 nearly mirrored FGMM, in my ratshit more than 3 MOA rattle battle gun.
Like you I generally load 2520 in mine, but I got some of the pulldown stuff from Hi tech, and it burned just fine in my guns.
And it shoots fine in my bolt guns also, which I won't say for the 2520 loads I shoot.

Agreed...it is proven...a good trigger job and practice usually solves the accuracy issues...assuming every thing else (including the shooter) is doing its job. I have an LRB w/ GI parts/JAE Gen II stock, and my only beef is the 8 lb trigger. Just haven't had the chance to stone it.

Maybe so. Don't know and don't really care. What I do know is that any platform or trigger can be learned if you expend the time and ammo to do it. You can't even mention M1A in a sentence without some poser chiming in with poor accuracy claims even when the thread has absolutely nothing to do with accuracy, reliability, whatever. Pretty strange considering that this is Sniper Hide...a site dedicated to precision tactical shooting, and the M1A is a proven and successful battlefield platform in that role. </div></div>
Agreed...it is proven...a good trigger job and practice usually solves the accuracy issues...assuming every thing else (including the shooter) is doing its job. I have an LRB w/ GI parts/JAE Gen II stock, and my only beef is the 8 lb trigger. Just haven't had the chance to stone it.
